I've got the look that I want, with the exception of the color scheme. Below are 8 different color schemes that I came up with.
Thoughts on which color scheme?

not sure about the mark on the left side, i think i'd like it better if it was above the text. not necessarily centered but maybe somewhere to the left but not left justified. i also like the color scheme of #3 and #4

Thanks 3howards...
Here are some that I tried using your suggestions and the color schemes that you liked...
The first, I just move the shape up top. The second, I moved it up top, made it a little large and rotated it a couple of degrees.
Thoughts on these?

you have a smooth, curvy logo. but the typo has quite a hard look to it.
the typo for your website looks softer. maybe you can use that.
your work is knd of clean and systematic. maybe you shouldnt put the grunge on the text after all.

I dunno, I just get two totally different feels from the mark and the text. The text is very... 'corporate' and the mark is very 'punk'. The two don't go together well here. I also don't think it's a matter of grunging the text, though it does look cool. If you did that in Illustrator there was another poster on the board wondering how to do something similar, maybe you can help them out. But for you.. I dunno, maybe it's as simple as a different font choice. Maybe it's a different mark. What happens if you do the whole thing punk? The whole thing corporate? What about in a western style? High-tech? Try a ton of different options first, just to see what fits.

I like the one with the green symbol in marthend-design-logos2.jpg where it's rotated a few defrees. And I actually also like the contrast between the symbol and the text. To me, it speaks of balance between professionalism and creativity, function and fun.
