I am designing a new logo for the Athletic Dept. at my school. I have a pretty good start, and my boss likes it, but something about the 'P' just doesn't sit right with me. I can't figure out what it is. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I like the first one better... what does NP stand for?

It's for North Park University. Does the cut-out in the P look alright though?

Looks fine to me Larson

the cutout looks wrong, there's a double stroke around the outside with a blue center stroke, but the cutout only has a single yellow stroke. It makes it look like there's a drop shadow (because of the contrast) on the outside but not on the cutout

IMHO I think that the first one is better. I think what you may be seeing is that it is so tight in the center of that 'P' that it's making your eyes buggy because of the yellow and blue. I would exaggerate the space a bit more. Open up that center and maybe make the thick part of the 'P' just as thick as the 'N' is.

Thanks for all the help! I'll spend some more time tweaking it and hopefully I can get it looking right...

it doesnt feel like the triangle serif on the 'p' is the same size and angle as on the 'n'... it probably is but visually it doesnt look it to me.

it needs to be simplified. thats your biggest problem.

loose the outer most yellow border. that will make a big difference.

also, with respect to the triangular thingy-ma-jobbers coming off the 'N' and 'P', try different angles. the current angle is too harsh, and doesnt visually integrate well with your chosen typeface.

and one last thing; when cutting the 'N', cut thru the entire stroke of the letter. dont cut 90% of it, leaving a sliver of a flat top. pay attention to those small details.

Thanks to everyone for all the great input! I'm new to the whole graphic design business and I've definitely learned a lot with this project. Have a good one!

Nothing much to add....

Check out the 'N' on this can for SoBe - in the No Fear 'logo'.

I was reading a magazine after seeing your post and immediately it popped out to me. You can always use products and logos as a reference to assist your designs.
