Hey all,

Well, I just watched a recording of the newest 30 Days episode. Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent to some peeps:

Well, 30 Days has started up again, I missed the first episode, but the DVR caught it. A very moving episode on the subject of illegal immigration and the issues involved (yeah, I leaked from the eyes a bunch, I'm not embarrassed).

Brief capsule: A Minuteman guy (also immigrant from Cuba, although legal) goes to live with a family of illegal immigrants, and learns some lessons from the experience. For those of you unfamiliar with the Minutemen, they're basically a civilian group that reports sightings of illegal immigrant crossings to the Border Patrol. Many of them carry some fairly high-powered guns.

Not a spoiler, but this show is not about proselytizing for a cause, as much as it is about understanding. If you can catch a rerun watch it. It's on the F/X channel. You'll learn stuff. Which is cool.

It actually sounds kind of like "Wife Swap" -- which I think is a cool show because you see people really learn and grow on the show. And sometimes not, if they're complete a-holes.

Hmm, sounds like a description of the series is in order. :D

If you guys ever heard of the movie Supersize Me, this is the same guy.

Basically, the premise is that he throws people into situations that they might normally be intolerant of, or might lack understanding of. So, for example, the first one I ever saw, he had this guy from the Midwest live with a Muslim family to try to understand their culture better. Another one, he had these total consumer types go live for 30 days on a totally vegan farm that produced all of its own energy. Another one, a somewhat homophobic straight guy goes to live with a gay guy in the Castro district in San Francisco. Another one, he and his girlfriend try to live off the minimum wage. Stuff like that.

Here's a link to the site: 30 Days (http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/30days/main.html). Granted it's F/X, which is Fox, which makes you wonder (or at least makes me wonder), but it's still a really good show.

Have you ever seen wife swap? I know it sounds silly, but if you haven't -- it's a similar premise. Families, very DIFFERENT families, swap for two weeks. It can get kind of nutty -- like when a southern fundamentalist traditional family swaps with the harley davidson "we don't clean the junk off our yard and don't give a **** what our neighbors think" family.

Not quite the same cerebral level lol -- but I do like this show because I find it fascinating to see people in uncomfortable, unfamiliar situations and see them learn a bit of tolerance (and gratitude) along the way.

Anyway, I'd love to check this out, it sounds super.

Well, EC, with your recommendation, I might check it out, but I can't swear.

I usually stay away from reality/follow people around and get up in 'dere bidness shows, but after I saw Supersize Me, and saw this guy had a show coming on (first season was last year), I had to watch. There was only one that didn't work for me, which was the one where the mom tried to understand her daughter's binge drinking by um, doing it herself. Not so much. All the other ones were cool though.

I've watched Wife Swap. I think it's a good way to learn about other people.

On that note. would anyone like to be hosted in Africa... Gimme a shout!

I would if I was still a wife lol :D

I've watched it too ... its is a good look into others lifestyles and how hard it is for them to adjust to someone elses ;)

I'd like to see something like, 'Designer Swap'. Like, maybe stick a big name design guru in to some dry, corporate in-house seat for a week. Or some website developer from a big porn site plopped into some government service on-line department. Lots of possibilities.

Every episode of wife swap I've seen is extreme conservative America vs. extreme liberal America or either extremely lazy America vs. extremely tidy America. Apparently there was one though with some hot wife from Marion, IA, who was like a fitness instructor/model or something; I didn't see it though. That makes me a sad panda.

Have you watched 30 Days, Reuber? Something gives me the feeling it'd be right up your alley, not from the reply to this thread, but just in general. I can't recommend it enough. :)

>>>probably vain attempt to steer initial thread topic back to 30 days. :D

I'm sure I'd like it. Isn't it done by the same guy who did Supersize me? I thought that movie/documentary was awesome.

Yup, same guy. He actually appeared in one of the episodes in the first season, one on trying to live on minimum wage for 30 days with his girlfriend.

Hope you can check it out. :)
