hi
my name's reid
i'm a graphic design student living in boston
i was recently contacted by a band promotion/design company asking if i would make flyer's for them, and how much i would charge
i don't really have any experience with the business-end of things, and was wondering if anyone could suggest a reasonable price.
i believe they wanted to pay by the flyer, not the hour.

example flyer:

thanks,
reid

Out of curiosity, what's the actual reason?

i tried to find where it said you couldn't discuss pricing in the rules, and all i found was this:
"2. Do not advertise here. A discrete link to your site or portfolio in your signature is acceptable, but pricing is not."

i could be wrong, but that sounds like it excludes me from posting my prices, but it doesn't sound like my question would be in violation.

is there another rule that i just couldn't find, or...?

The reason is because it's against the law in the US. Price fixing, they consider it.

it's illegal for freelancers to discuss rates as it could be considered anti-competitive behavior (i.e. price fixing) that's the reason why it's not allowed. I'll see if I can find something for you.

Its illegal in a public body to discuss, not in private messages. You can PM anyone and ask your question and it isnt illegal.

This must happen like 10 times a month doesnt it?

btw thats a cool poster

1. Good poster
2. Your prices should reflect what you think is a reasonable charge for skilled labour per hour that you spent doing it. I know it sounds stupid, but its not like you're stacking shelves or anything. This requires some creative and technical knowledge.

So it's just trying to prevent cartel? I think that's the word..

JPnyc, you should put up the same warning used in the web forum about pricing discussions.

Crazinessisay, you can go to just about any bookstore in Boston and peruse the GAG Handbook (Graphic Artist Guild) over a cup of coffee. The pricing rates in there are a pretty good guide. The people who approached you may expect your pricing to be a little lower because you are a student. But don't sell yourself short.
