I am curious about what others do when you have a customer asking for some design, you get the specs, go check out there site and start doing the ritual exploring of the company to gain knowledge for a concept, blah blah blah... to discover you totally disagree heavily with what the company does. (ie. a vegan designer would NOT want to design for a slaughterhouse) Add to it that you hear through the grapevine they had lawsuits against them and they filed bankruptcy, but are trying to recover.

Aside from the obvious answers of, customer writes the check so designer designs what they want, and decline to take the job... what other perceptions are there on this matter?

sorry if this has already been asked before, I couldnt find any old threads on it..

There are certain things I won't design and certain companies I wouldn't design for. I don't come across pious or start a protest or anything, I just kindly turn the job down. To me, morals are more important than money.

I agree with you, Beck. There are some jobs that might pay dividends and I could reap rewards, but then my morals and conscience would haunt me forever. I do the same thing - I kindly turn the job down.

The bankruptcy thing... yeah, I would tunr it down right away. You would be asking for trouble with that. Do your research and make sure it's a fact and then decide.

If they are having money troubles, then you might want to pass just based on that. I am torn though when it comes to the morality aspect.

I strongly beleive that change starts with one person. If you don't agree with a companys ethics, and take your individual stand against them in whatever way, that's great, I respect that. Try to find someone who agrees with you, so on and so fourth. It's a tough battle in any regard, but giving up because "thier a mega corporation and one person won't matter" is a terrible thing to do.

On the otherhand, someone will do this job. Please get FACTS about their status and what they do. Make sure it's not just bad press. If you decide to take the job, get half payment up front.
