I'm sure all of you have your own domain name and a server to host all of your images on and all your web design etc. etc... well I don't.. not yet anyway, I hope to get one... someday... I know I will but I plan on waiting a few years until I'm 18 and can get a credit card of my own to use at Go-Daddy.
Until then Though I'm using DeviantArt as a portfolio, I was wondering what people think of that, does it seem quite childish and should I worry about people stealing my designs?
Thanks,
JDiP
I saw a few cases where material was stolen from photographers on Deviantart. It was pretty shameless, a well known publisher used material from the photographer 'foureyes' needless to say the publisher is getting the crap sued out of them.

Well I don't think i have anything worth stealing, I'm not well known or anything >.<
I hate devient art with a pashion… but thats my opinion.
Yes, I do know people who like it and post their work on it to be praised but, I still hate it.
With that being said I feel it is childish and would worry about people chopping up your work.
If this is only a "portfolio" of fun thigns not work related then I wouldn't worry.
However, I would tell somebody to hang themselves before presenting a online portfolio hosted by devientart to a professional job app or client.
if its just to get your prasie and what not I wouldn't worry.
By the way… Its not called devientdesign for a reason.

If DeviantArt offers the feedback on your art that you seek and it helps inspire you to pursue art, I wouldn't see a problem with it at this time. Of course, by the time you are interviewing for jobs and need to show an electronic portfolio, you will certainly need something more professional ;)

What would you suggest then for a professional portfolio? Obviously I'm not going to be applying for any high-end jobs at 16 but I would still like to show off my work to get some small side-jobs.
I personally think that DeviantArt would be more professional than some thing like geocities.com/username or lycos.com etc.
the word professional these days…lol

at your age and experience level, I would think that having your work on Deviant Art is fine... but check this out, too:

That's what I meant, pretty much stay away from the free hosting sites like Geocities (is that still around?). Get a goodwebhost, they can cost less than $10 a month to run your own site. Then the rest is up to you, of course....
Although I am not familiar with it, that link Morea suggested is probably your best route for what you're needing at the moment.

As far as going to places like deviant art .... thats fine as far as I am concerned. Regardless of where you host something if someone wants to steal it they will be it a Major web hosting company or small time stuff.
Most people see Deviantart as being a bit unprofessional, but you can always upgrade your account with them.
Also congrats on the 1000 Kittie

at 16 years old, I think its fine. I am also a deviantart hater, as I spent a good couple years their and got sick of little kids telling me how to basically do my job, also, favortism holds a heavy hand on that website.
I would hold out for a godaddy account, that portfolio.com one isn't really my forte either, spending that amount of money on a web portfolio is outrageous, if you are skilled in your trade, you should be spending those hundreds of dollars on promoting and marketing techniques where you live to generate revenue, not some hack who will pay you crap for a contract job.
