I have a question about extensis suitcase. IT'S NOT WORKING! I'm getting a message saying that fonts are conflicting with fonts in the system folder. If anyone knows what I am talking about please let me know! Thanks!

Suitcase thinks you're trying to load fonts that are duplicates of the
ones already active on your computer. If they are system fonts that
are causing the conflict it's a real PITA. You have to deactivate them
first then load the new ones.

Thanks! I don't know how it happened. How do I deactivate them?

What OS are you on? What version of suitcase?

OSX 10.4 (I think) -- I know it is Tiger. 11.0.2 is the version of Extensis.

Be real careful which system fonts you de-activate. In general, depending on how you have your fonts organized, you can delete any fonts that are in your Users folder>Library>Fonts, providing that is, that you don't plan on using them. Don't touch the ones in the System>Library>Fonts folder, some applications require those in order to run.
Suitcase X1 (not sure which version you're using) has a Tools menu, where you can manage conflict fonts.
I have to say that OS X and fonts, gack. It took us a while to get it all straightened out after we upgraded. Fonts everywhere!
I'll try to dig out an article I found on the Apple forums about the best approach to doing this.

A pretty comprehensive approach:
Font cleanup (http://homepage.mac.com/macdrben/blogwavestudio/LH20041002162415/LHA20041030143216/index.html)

Also, this is a handy tool. Free download http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/

So basically there is no easy way of solving this?

No, you're going to have to dig in and fix it, maybe on a slow day? But once you've done it, you're usually good.
you can dump the suitcase database file which stores the locations and activated/unactivated status' of your fonts and start a fresh with installing them. We've had no problem with having to do this in the past but do it at your own risk
i think it's under user>library>preferences>suitcase or some where but i'm not at a mac right now to check
or you can find it by typing suitcase data in spotlight
*AGAIN DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK*

If I were you, since your OS is tiger, I'd upgrade Suitcase11 to Suitcase Fusion. Not long ago, my coworkers and I went through hell when we upgraded the OS to Tiger. Suitcase was so bad we used FontBook instead and that was hell too. The difference for us was we had Suitcase10 not 11. I raised so much hell that I demanded that we get Suitcase Fusion and we did. It has worked very well.

Jim, does Fusion play nicely with InDesign? We have Suitcase X1 at work, and it doesn't seem to auto-activate fonts when I open an InDesign CS2 file. Unless it's something else that I'm doing wrong.
Here at home, I've been using Linotype Font Explorer X, and it seems to work pretty well. I've been hesitant about recommending it at work, however, since it's a beta.
check this page urstwile, maybe of some use

Urstwile, I've had no problems at all with Suitcase Fusion in a production environment and works great with Indy. My understanding of Linotype Font Explorer X is it's great for home use but heavy production type work it's really not suited for. I'm not sure if that's true or not.

The IT department at school installed it. So I'm just going ask them. I get all the support I need there. So I would rather have them do it. At least I know its not me who will mess things up! Thanks all! I appreciate it!
