Hey, just wondering if anyone here uses Quark for stuff like Poster or CD Cover design?
If so I was hoping maybe someone could send me a file that they have finished just so I can get a nack of what way people layout stuff, what settings they use, what goes where etc, you know? or maybe someone would know of a good dvd tutorial or something on this particular topic?
Thanks in advance!

You can get templates to design on top of to tell you the proper sizing, bleeds, etc. if thats what you're looking for. I think the templates I have are pdf's. I bring them into photoshop and convert them to a grayscale tiff. Then I go in quark and make a picture box and let the tiff serve as my measurement information.
Here's a link to my manufacturers page. Look on the bottom left hand side and there will be pdf templates for various sizes. Is this what you were looking for?

You can use Quark for both of these item. I would recommend using Photoshop and or Illustrator for the design and then bringing the final desing into quark (if you must). I have templates for cd's, covers. jackets etc. etc. in many different formats and version. Give me an email address and I'll hook you up if you tell what program you want them in. As far as the poster just pick a size (think about printing cost up front) 11 x 17 or something bigger $$$$ and go to town. There are a lot companies doing those larger 4c poster for unbeatable prices. Discmakers just started and I think it's like $99 for 50 posters or something crazy like that.

I'm doing a promo poster right now to go in stores that sell the cd. It's 12x18.

12 x 18? wierd size -
have yet to venture into InDesign. I'm too profitient with Quark. What are your thoughts on what makes InDesign better? Perhaps it's time to waddle from my comfort zone

InDesign has a lot to offer that Quark currently doesn't. I have both programs at work right now and am in the same situation. Quark 7 is going to have options to add opacity and have a few other big changes that will make it a little more comparable. I also believe that it is going to use layers which other versions don't currently. I'm waiting it out because I think Quark has realized that it has to get in the game and make some improvements or they're gonna be in some trouble. In the ads around here I see a lot of companies still using Quark, but some are switching to InDesign so it is a definite plus to know both.

Quark is in trouble anyways, I mean think about it, you buy the Adobe package you get Indesign included. If you buy Quark, you have to buy a seperate program for another 2-300 bucks.
Indesign, it seems more compatable with the other Adobe programs than Quark is. It likes to give you a turd every time you work with it.
Even version 7 wont be enough to dig them out, its a sinking ship, so they are doing everything they can to get out of there hole and back into the competition, so they try to create new things/functions that are similar to Indesign, so that they are able to compete, but they'll probably rush it just like every other software maker who needs to get a program out before they become even more doomed, then it creates programming bugs, and more problems.
So really, is Quark, worth it? I think not, but thats just my opinion.

12 x 18 is tabloid extra, also known as "how to make 11 x 17 with full bleeds in-house." i think it also works on a press with a standard 22" sheet, without trim charges, but don't quote me on that by any means...been way tooooo long of a day.
