I'm quite new to the design world, but know I love type and layout. Are there any famous agencies or organisations I really need to know about who work with type, editorial design etc. I want to start researching agencies etc so that I can start to build up an idea of the type of places I would like to work for or try and get placements at or just aspire to be part of. I live in the U.K but I would like to know about all top agencies in this field, just so I can keep up to date if nothing else.
Thanks

Margo Chase is a big type designer
Saggmaster is another big name in design
Our own member Jeff Fisher is one of the best logo designers, and has a published book.
Vonster is a great Illustrator
Arnold Worldwide and Hill Holiday are two big names in the Ad Agency business.

Some of these organizations may be helpful in providing lists of member firm and agencies - especially since you are in the U.K.:
British Design Council (http://www.designcouncil.org.uk)
D&AD (http://www.dandad.org/)
Here's a link to many design organizations around the world (http://icograda.com/web/members-typesearch.shtml?pfl=www/members-findbytype2.param&op2.sf=FULL). Here's another (http://icograda.com/web/members-typesearch.shtml?pfl=www/members-findbytype2.param&op2.sf=ASSOCIATE).

I am studying in Birmingham at the moment, but my next step may very well be London...gonna see where life takes me.
Any tips on getting any work experience? Really feel even a week somewhere would be advantagous, even if it wasn't at a top London agency.

mmm. not aware of any good agencies in Brum, i know a few in Manchester and Londond of course so i think to get top experience you will need to travel.
as to how to get in somewhere, really its a case of call call call and hope you get lucky, if you are willing to do a week for no pay that would definately help!
good luck!

I would gladly do a week or two for free...think you have to be prepared to really. When you say call call call surely millions of students (well maybe not that many)do this? I feel like a needle in a haystack who they will never discover lol.
By far the most (in)famous agency of the modern era is... AGENCY.COM !
When they roll... THEY ROLL BIG! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_We_Roll%2C_We_Roll_Big)
:D
PS, I used that phrase the other night during a Cash Flow game (devised by Rich Dad, Poor Dad author, Robert Kiyosaki). I risked everything, borrowed to the nines, until I had $120 left in my monthly income, to buy 10,000 shares of low-priced stocks, then sold 'em for 40 times what I paid, a few turns later.
When I rolled the dice, I said, "When I roll, I roll BIG!", but nobody got the joke. I guess it's an 'in' thing. ;)
