I am trying to get a shot to make books appear as if they're flying - obviously I can do some of it in Photoshop, but how on earth do I get those fanned pages to work?? Oh, and I have a little digital camera...LOL (Canon s500)

That image is the idea I'm looking for.

Hmmmm. Books? Flying? Maybe a couple of weeks ago!
Try using a tripod if you have one and a timed setting on the camera. Set a fan up out of the image and fan the pages with a slow shutter speed... keeping the focus on the book cover edges. I'm not sure how many settings your camera has, though.

not sure how I would go about this.

Some books if you open them up flat and weigh down the outer cover will natually make that fan effect. They need to be fairly thick and hard cover.

You could try putting things between the pages to keep them apart and just have the book open on a table. I'm thinking something like folded card perhaps?
Or hanging a book up with string and then cloning/healing out the string?

So, there's no "make pages fan" option in PhotoShop, eh? I've been testing my books...LOL. Those that survived Wesley the new rabbit. ARGH....I think I need a better camera.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'll start on these tomorrow. Fishing line....carbboard. I might try dropping one from a window. If I don't post in the next few days, you can assume it fell on my head.

lmao Cat ... good luck ;)
and no there is no make fan option in PS that I know of :D
But that doesn't mean anything :p
you would need to use a fast shutter and set it up on a tripod.
If you don't have a camera with an adjustable shutter then I doubt this effect is feasible with your equipment. Since, you need to freeze motion.

Okay Cat,
I posed the question on a photography forum I frequent and here's the answer I got. I feel kinda silly for not thinking of it.
"Green Screen" the background using a color that is not in the book. (Just a background cloth or paperboard similiar to what you would use to photograph an item on Ebay) The book is "fanned" vertically standing upright and the camera is moved to get whatever angle you wish or you can just move the book around in your editing program after you remove the background (selecting then erasing the greenscreen color). In PSP X you use the pick tool to resize and rotate the book on a layer, in PSP 7 you use the deformation tool, and in PhotoShop there is a rotate tool and a deformation tool which will do similiar things.
Hope this helps.
