I'm sure this has been covered a zillion times before, but as usual, I am up against relentless deadlines.

Is there any acceptable way to resize a low rez image up to 300 dpi for print?

The short answer is, if you're talking about scaling a low res image considerably larger, then, "no".

What size is your low res image and how big are you needing to scale it to?

scroll down until you get to the section on "increasing image resolution".

According to some book by the head of that national photoshop association thingy, he states that you can take an image and increase it's size by 10% increments without a loss of resolution. HOw it works if it works? I don't know. But it couldn't hurt.

I went to a photoshop seminar and they talked about this (I dont think it was 10% though?) They gave us a link to go down load an action but I can not for the life of me remember what the site was... I searched a little and came up dry.

Sorry, I'm sure if you search long enough you might be able to find it. I am pretty skeptical of this but they say it can be done, so who am I to judge?!

D-Frag posted how to do this a couple weeks ago. See if I can find it...

Hmmm, that may not work though, I suppose you have to start in 300 dpi.

So D-Frag, you first sample the image to 300 DPI and then do the percentage increments? I was a little confused by that.

i just wanted to throw in my 2 cents a week late.

I use this technique a lot, because of all the idiot clients giving me 72 DPI poor quality photos. (even when I say, HIGH QUALITY!!!!!) and it works great. just resize the image to 300 DPI without resampling. then turn on bicubic resampling and increase size by 10% I think if you increased it by even less % each time it would be smoother.

Also, Genuine Fractals is a program that can resample even better. I've talked to a fine art printer who said they can get 200 DPI at 8.5x11 up to 30x40" or higher at 300 DPI and still keep it at a good printable quality.

Thanks Camarota,
Every time I've heard of this technique, it's from "experts" but they always but a disclaimer that they have never tried it, but they have heard it works.

You can't polish a turd.Of course you can! In the end, it'll still look like shit, though.

hahaha Reuber, good one.

Wow, You guys are not optimistic about resampling. Well, you definately can't start off with a 1"x1" 72 DPI and get it to 4"x4" at 300 dpi. But the larger the photo the bigger you can get it.

Oh sure, and if you are doing billboards, it can suck pretty bad up close because people are seeing it from far away. But in print where you have to do a full page ad or something people are can see up close? Cringeworthy.
