It costs $75 extra per page that we print color on. A salesperson has an ad...a tiny tiny ad - a 1colx2' ad...that is full color...that has to go in the real estate rent section. The problem with this is there is NO OTHER COLOR ADS to go on that page. Why is that a problem? Well...because a 1colx2' ad is only $24.95 (full color) so that doesn't nearly cover the cost of color on that page ($75). I understand this completely so when I do the layout I have to keep this in mind to save on money. The salesperson of course is suppose to explain to the client that their ad may not run in the section intended, depending on how the color is that week. OF COURSE they NEVER do!!! She can offer them an addt'l BW or some kinda deal or whatever - its not my problem!! So she b!tches if its not in the section it should be in. My hands are tied. If I don't put it in the correct section bc of color placement she b!tches at me. If I put it in the correct section and there is no other color on that page...the bossman comes to me and asks 'WHY' I placed it there. He doesn't really b!tch but he is obviously NOT happy.
So..this happened this morning. I admit it. I put her friggin ad on a page with no other color so it would be in the correct section because frankly I would rather hear my boss ask me 'why' than to have her a$$ nag me all the fkn time! So he says 'why is this ad here...it costs us like $75 when this happens!' and I said 'well because that is so and so's ad and I didn't wanna hear her complain about it being in the wrong section!' and then I explained to him that I the salespeople need to explain this somehow to their clients and they need to understand this themselves so that when I DO place it in the wrong section bc of color placement, they don't come to me and b!tch!!!!! GRRRR!
This is a rant even tho I did it pretty calmly but I am fkn annoyed!! I like my boss...hell for the most part I like ALL the people I work with but there is a serious lack of communication in this office. We don't have meetings. EVER. It's rediculous! Even when we started our 2nd publication I didn't know until like 2 weeks before we were goin to press and I have to put the sh!t together!! We have asked to have meetings...all of us. But nothing. He has sales meetings once in awhile but that doesn't help the rest of us who don't know WTF is goin on most of the time. It's a really small business and we all kinda depend on one another and the communnication is necessary! FK I am so annoyed!!!!

Can you do their smaller ad in spot color perhaps and preserve the rest as black and white, or is your printer saying 75.00 per color page no matter how much color?

Yeah...we print with the Savannah Morning News...its $75/per color page reguardless of spot or full color. I will sometimes do a BW one in the right section and the full color wherever it can go but that is up to the salespeople to tell me to do that, ya know what I mean??? Otherwise then accounting comes to me and asks me why I placed 2 ads for that business when they only paid for one. See what I mean?!?!

you can only do your job within it's limits. the instant you have to start nannying your sales staff, you're adding to your stress and devaluing your position as their designer. you can warn them and remind them, but if they're going to get arsey with you, just do it...and make sure to channel the poohyness directly to them - don't get none of that on you.
if you need meetings and don't get them, why not start circulating memos? at least then, you've let people know what's going on at your end, so that you're being above board with all of them and if they choose to ignore you - that's their tough banana.
i got my mojo workin' but it just don't work on you...

That's just it Cabunckle! I'm not JUST the designer as it is now, ya know! I have always had much more responsibility than that here. Seriously...if I had titles here I would be these things all rolled into one.
Art Director
Production Manager
Office Manager
IT Person
But that doesn't bother me. I mean I like that I am the one that works with the press when there is a problem, and I like being able to troubleshoot and fix the computers when somethings wacko - instead of tapping my fingers and waiting on an IT person bc I dunno what I'm doin...ya know?! I could do without the office manager sh!t and dealing with disgruntled clients but I just look to that as training for when I am out on my own someday.
Really tho ...I do it all and no the pay does not reflect it...LOL! But I like my job for the most part. ALWAYS annoyed with salespeople tho. I think that is obvious :o( The memos are a good idea. I can atleast do that on my end...starting with all these new upgrades I'm getting ready to do. Maybe the others will get the hint and notice the lack of communication too.

yeah, sorry - i kind of forgot that you're running the whole damn office single-handed...you just make it seem so effortless! :) probably what the sales staff think, too.
just do what you gotta do and cover your ass - meaning document everything and keep everyone abreast (haha) of what you're doing. just because they don't know how to communicate, doesn't mean you can't be on the ball. if that makes the rest of the staff pissed off because they'll actually have to start paying attention - so be it! and maybe you'll start a trend.
good luck!

Man D-zine I don’t blame you I would be pissed. I would defiantly pull everyone in a meeting or boycott my duties or something cause these people need to know how to do there job. I realize more and more how little people know when it comes to our end of the field.
My responsibilities here are find cause people work with me and I’m not designing for the sales staff only the manager of the sales staff which is my manager so I only deal with one person. Now my freelance work is interesting. Most people have no idea how a press works or how printing is done so their ignorance is what’s cause these problems and really make them seem incompetent when they might not be.
I suggest a lot of memos till something breaks, send out a big one about the things you need your staff to know and address them like they are your staff. You already have the position D-zine I think it’s time to flaunt your power. Go get em girl!

Have you guys thought to find another offset/web printing company that isn't so tight on color printing?
We used one in Kennesaw Georgia when i worked for Dorey In Atlanta, they had better pricing than anyone and the qulity was superb. Surely there is another outfit within 75 miles of Savanna (south carolina maybe)....

Yeah - we actually just switched to the Savannah Morning News a little over a year ago Allen. Before that we were at the Statesboro Herald and he was having it printed there LONG before I was here. We switched bc of prices - the morning news beat the heralds prices. I find that Statesboro's quality was alot better but I worked with both prepress departments and like both. Either way I have to work around color issues.
The main reason we have stayed between Statesboro herald and the morning news is our deadline. It's nearly impossible to find a press that can do what we need done on the deadline we need it done. We finish the layout and upload about noonish on wed. We have to have the papers back by about 6pm that same wednesday so that route ppl can get them wed night and distribute them wedneday night and thursday morning. These are the only 2 presses that can meet this weekly deadline...so far. I like the press...and all the prepress ppl..I am just annoyed with sales people as always!! :oP
BTW Allen - both my pubs are in Statesboro :o)

I understand completely D. I catch poohyness from salesppl all the time... luckily, my design mgr is sort of the buffer there... she's sorta like our guard dog. She r00lz!
Anyway, sales people are just going to come w/ the territory of our chosen career path as an annoyance, until there's some sort of law passed that makes it ok to beat the hell out of them. *shrug* Guess we'll just have to suck it up and wait for that law to be passed. /emoticons/icon_wink.gif
