Just found this over at VDR so thought I would share....

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

Horrible way to go... better than being devoured by a croc though.

Unbelievable...

I loved Steve Irwin and his show. He was crazy but controlled and knew what he was doing....it's sad that he goes in this way after going through far more dangerous endeavors. I just feel bad for Terri (wife).

Oh my...

Steve Irwin was one crazy guy! I guess he's been fortunate to have lived as long as he has, with what he does...

I'm sad to hear he's gone.

Holy Sh!t. The guy lived on the edge, that's for sure. Too bad, family and all.

I was just reading that it's believed she's on some expedition or something and hasn't been told of her husband's death yet...

No she hasn't .... pretty sad that the whole world is going to know before she does :(

I read that too, and that was probably the saddest part I read. Made my heart hurt, thinking about her getting the news when she returns.

Crikey that sucks, he was awsome. Lets just hope his legacy, and his experience about the animals lives on, and brings a greater awareness to the purpous he was trying to get people to understand.

“The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest,”

Ouch.

Wow, they have it on wiki already. That was fast.

Stingray's poison is a highly toxic venom.

I always knew he would die of "natural" causes. It sucks though.

Wow, ya know even though he always did all that crazy stuff - this news still shocked me for some reason?!

Just heard this just now. Sad, and very unfortunate. I thought he was hilarious.

Here's a collection of some Irwin videos.

He was a cool guy, loved animals and had a great lust for life...

Sadly he left a wife and 2 kids (that I know of)

:(

I didn't know much about stingrays but if Wiki is right, it's interesting that it's highly unlikely to be killed by a stingray as they swim away first. Of course, Irwin was known to chase although a stingray (unlike a snake or whatnot) is not something you can put your hands on.

Amazing how fast the internet works, this was only about twelve hours ago or so.

Very sad news. I was quite a fan of his. :(

Stingrays don't sting. They have a friggin dagger on their tails that can put a hole in you. (fisherman's nightmare - that's why I don't waderfish down in Florida).
Without reading any of the articles I'd wager he died more from the wound than the poison. A big enough fish would be like being stabbed with a jagged knife.

The guy was an idiot, if you ask me. I'm all for documentaries but this guy was in-your-face stupid. Most of what he did was riling animals for the camera. Sorry. Wildlife WILL bite you. Especially when you poke at it. It was only a matter of time.

Apparently his wife has been informed, according to the Wikipedia article, and has returned by private plane.

The latest I am hearing is that the Stingray punctured his chest just under the sternum area in an upward motion puncturing his heart.

I'm still really bummed over this :(

Also, the stingray that got him wasnt a normal small one. It was a Bull Ray, which is pretty much the largest stingray in the world, with a diameter of up to 6 feet and weight of up to 700+ lbs.

Uh huh. BIG jagged knife.

They were commenting on the radio this morning that he would probably have prefered going this way to slipping in the bathtub or something. Maybe not at 44 though.

How old was Jacques Cousteau when he died? 87. Now there was a man with respect for animals that can kill you.
