What I am trying to do is take an AVI (http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/avi.cfm) and turn it into a gif file to use as an avitar on a forum I regularly post at. I have searched and searched and turned up nothing. I am at wits end here. I was hoping to find a tutorial on this etc.. that shows softwares suggestions and proper steps. Does anyone have any info to help me out?

Thanks in advance!

I would open the .avi file on a video editing program (QuickTime Pro for example) and copy the scene I want to use. Save as "image sequence" (this way you get the video separated into image frames) , then use a .gif maker app (ImageReady works great) to actually create the .gif animation.

Hope this works.

you could always just open the movie, pause the scene that you want to use and take a screenshot then edit the rest out. to take a screen shot, press "print screen" that copies it to your clipboard then paste it into a graphic program and crop out the rest. Or you can get a screen shot program that will let you crop it out.

How many frames are you planning on?
