Rant alert!
Was reading an article in the new March 04 issue of Digital Output Magazine. It's an editorial on the hiring of personnel...
Here are some quotes:
'Time was, you hired personnel in this industry based on their ability to operate equipment. After all, you were in the business of providing printed material for your customers and if your employees couldn't operate the hardware on the floor, you were in a bit of trouble. That was then...this is now.'
Or
'Take this from a shop owner in London, England, who recently told me, 'Perhaps our most valuable employee is a young 21-year-old woman who doesn't know a thing about printing. She knows what the digital advantage is all about and knows how to talk to today's customers.'
Or
'Yet another shop owner in the U.S. recently told me, 'Most of the equipment today is relatively easy to run so I want people that bring that extra touch to a job...that know how to make a job stand out...'
---------------------
Hmmm... What's a digital advantage?
Equipment is relatively easy to operate (Let's see, it says Push to Start), it's just the file prep that takes skill. Who is more valuable? Talk or Do?
If I call a print shop and get a rep who didn't 'know a thing about printing', and I've talked to several, I'm on the phone to the principle sales dude asking for a new rep. Fast. Or I call another print shop.
This mag actually kinda sucks. A lot of their articles are written half-baked with not a lot of pertinent research into a topic... Just an observation.
Specialization is for insects...
