Hi there,
Am new to web design and my question is this. I have done a HTML course and have a handle on how it works buy AM very lazy so want to use a program to write my code. I have Golive as part of my CS. Is it worth learning that or should i just stump up the extra dosh for dreamweaver?

well, i guess ill jump in before the web natzis discourage you from "allowing the program to write the code for you" and that the best program for web design is "notepad".

dreamweaver is superior to golive in my opinion. personally, i would purchase a copy of dreamweaver if you plan on doing web design. also, look into a program called "fireworks". its a nice app, and works seamlessly with dreamweaver. good luck.

ha ha, have seen a bit of sniffiness about not writing your own code. I definitely agree it's probably better but i have a day job and a shop to manage.

Dreamweaver was around before GoLive, but GoLive is starting to move to the front of the design program, just like Quark was before InDesign, but now InDesign is the program of choice.

Differences between GoLive and Dreamweaver (CS2 vs 8.0):
GoLive has a cool layout grid feature (more WYSIWYG), and it is layer-based
GoLive has a many more features, like:
adding favicons are a snap
use psd and ai native files, and GoLive will save the jpgs for you
take a psd with text, assign it a variable, and then reuse it for menu items, headings, etc. (this one was the clincher for me)

Since Adobe has purchased Macromedia, I'm sure that they are going to combine these two products, and we will have the best of both worlds.

Beginners in Web Design should use the WSIWYG type editors, but at the same time use the split view (Code/Design) so you can see what you are doing on the code side, so if you need to make changes, it will be easier.

That's why they invented WSIWYG editors, so you didn't HAVE to write the code. You could focus on DESIGN.
