Just wondering what everyone believed in? Religious? Christian? Muslim? Taoism?
I think Mike said he was into Taoism...may i ask why?
I grew up Christian as a child, but my present beliefs go beyond religion.

Was raised Christian (Church of Christ - claims to be non-denominational), but I consider myself atheist. I've read a lot of books on Wiccan, Buddism, Christianity and lately the Muslim religion... but I just can't seem to believe in one particular religion. I don't believe in a 'higher power' or 'enlightenment' or anything similar.

Taoism would be my choice, if I practiced, or had any want to practice a religion. But, I would consider myself Atheist in part.

I was raised Christian, but never really thought of it as more than a bunch of fables with an underlying morality lesson. When i first went to college i majored in philosophy and religions so i could learn as much as possible about the thoughts and theories of different cultures worldwide. after lots of studying i found that eastern religions were more my style, and later found Taoism which just seemed "right". it's more of a philosophy than a religion, and is actually a precursor to any religion that exists today...just a little younger than Confucianism. It's a very "go with the flow" way of thinking.

I think there is something beyond living as we do now. i'm just not sure what it is. Cause let me tell you, if I die and this is it...that SUCKS major league.

Defjoe, I am in the same boat man. I also believe a bit into what science has show us about the origins of life and such.
As far as religion goes, the only thing IMHO it was good for, was preventing the muslims from conquering Europe in the 11th century AD, since it united the christians against them (the crusades). Other than that, it's about as relevant to me as the latest release by Justin Timberlake.

Yea Magnus...know what confused me when I was a kid. I went to a Catholic school, not because my parents were religous (cause they are not) but for the safety factor (they didn't like public). but I would have Religon in the morning and they would teach Adam and Eve and how God made the earth in 7 days (well 6 really and 7 was a lazy day) but then in the afternoon we would have Science and they would teach us about Evolution.
uhmmm..so which is it?

Of course, it is also possible, for Noah, and a crew consisting of only his family, to care for and keep on a ship 2 of every species of mammal, avian and reptile on this planet for 40 days and nights. They theorized that in order to do so, a ship the size of 10 modern aircraft carriers would be required (that's a ship over 10 000 feet long, displacing over 1 million tons), with a minimum crew of 50 000. And that was on discovery channel. Oh yeah, no holes there....Not to mention the gene pool would be so depleted...all the animals would have one eye and be retarded.
Besides, if there was a god, then the Toronto Maple Leaf's would've won a stanley cup by now...unless I'm in hell?

Seriously!!! To re-write Ryan post...
To think that the world was made by a big imaginary being is rediculous. To think that we were created with the snap of a finger is stupid too. The theory of creation breaks down no matter how you look at it.
In reality, the bible has as much credability as an Aesop's fable. It's a collection of stories passed down and translated over and over and over again. Like Mike said... it's a big game of telephone that's lasted 3000 years or so.
The eastern religions seem to have the "kind and gentle to all creatures" philosophy nailed, and that sounds pretty good to me.

Woah! I'm sorry Ryan, but to say there are no hypocrites there is a VERY BOLD statement. I don't care how righteous or good or moral or whatever you are there will be some instances where you will act or speak hypocritically. I'm not just talking about 'Christians' or 'Jews' or any particular religion... I'm talking about people. By nature we have selfish urges that cause us to be hypocritical. Can you honestly tell me you and everyone else in that organization hasnot said or done anything hypocritical since you've been a part of "The Way International"?
Yeah... this is something I feel strongly about. I've met a LOT of hypocritical 'non-hypocrits'!

Ya know, I've avoided church since I was a kid cause I saw real early on how hypocritical the church goers were and I figured I heard the story once and didn't need to hear it over and over again. I chose my own path and continue to do so. I would like to see religions abolished. They were conceived to merely explain the unexplainable and for some self righteous people to control the masses. Well, the masses got smart along the way and gained their freedom. Personally, I would just like to see those in the pulpit to preach respect tolerance and caring for all living things. Period. Something like the American Indians. Christianity really bothers me. The destruction of cultures throughout the world to benefit a few pompous asses. Burns me man. I choose to practice no religion, just tolerance, respect and caring for all living things. Why does it matter so much how we got here, the fact remains humans are screwing things up like no species before them. We may eventually disappear altogether in a few thousands years, like so many species before us. All for the good of the planet, I say. So, did God invent man, or, did man invent God?

Wow, I didn't expect so many responses to this topic. I think one great thing about liffe is our choice to believe in what we choses to believe. I know what it's like to live the religious life because i lived it to the T. I think when it comes to this that we are open to all views and accept what ever belief we want to .
Might i suggest a book? Try Jane Roberts, a book called Seth Speaks. I know at first is sounds funny and crazy. An entity speaking through someone, but his views snd analogies are eye opening. His message in a nutshell....You Create Your Own Reality.
He tries to call us back to an understanding we once had thousands of years ago, before religion, before all the limitations that stand before us today.
no wars here....just some eye opening.

Seems to be about more of making money for the chruch than about communing with our higher power. So I guessyou could say I am a soloist christian. ;-)

The way I see it, we are all God. God is cumulative. That which is LIFE, is God. It's a pure form of energy that is out there among us to be tapped. Jesus, Muhammed, Buddah, and all the others understood this and tried to communicate the principle to the masses through time and the masses, being dumb as dogs comprehended it as best they could and related it to others as best they could, and the stories, which started out in fact basically became legend and flowery in prose. The legends and stories grew greater than the truth. The birth of religion. We are all seeking the same truth, just coming from different directions, and what is so terribly wrong with that? Accept our differences, hell, embrace them. We are all a part of God.

Wow! Old thread...
For the record: I was raised Jewish, but I don't practice anymore. I think religion has it's good points, but I think it causes many problems with the boundaries it creates (at least among many people of faith). Just look at the Middle East for one example.

too funny mag ....
on a more serious note, allen h, i'm with ya. i am a christian, saved, and yes, going to heaven when i pass. i went to a southern baptist college and absolutely hated the attitude and arrogance of most of the professors. what's ironic is that they were mostly the religion/christian studies professors. i found that the godly men were in the art department which were looked down upon because 'we' didn't dress like everyone else (the school was prepy, tommy hilfiger showcase) and didn't act like everyone else. i firmly believe that the arrogance in christianity mainly comes from a lack of understanding and acceptance of human beings. christianity has recently made this huge issue with gay marriage, calling it the greatest threat to the sanctity of marriage and then turnaround and embrace couples that get divorced. according to our belief system, it's all wrong.
whatever ... i believe what i believe and always will. but i'm not going to condemn someone for believing something different. who am i to do so?

It's interesting that you say that, Angel, because in the Bible it says 'God is love.' (1 John 4:8)
I'm a Christian, but I'm not a fanatic. There's a difference.
I know that there are a *lot* of so-called 'Christians' who are hypocrites, but you'll find some of that in just about any religion. I do not condone any violence done in the name of 'the church' (spanish inquisiton, anyone?). Unfortunately, when people believe so strongly in something, be it religion or nationalism, or even racism (and here I'm thinking Nazis), their beliefs can be twisted by their leaders to get them to do a lot of in-human things.
I believe what I believe, and while I also have an open mind, I think things through and make decisions for myself. I am not going to believe that 'black is white' just because a minister tells me so. Not all religious people are nuts, but unfortunately, a lot of the ones who make the most 'noise' don't even know why they believe what they do.
I've also studied religion a lot, and while I believe what I believe, I also respect others rights to do the same.
Ha! Just my 2 cents.

Try this... this is the one we sing in 'group'
'I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight.
I feel charming,
Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real.
See the pretty girl in that mirror there:
Who can that attractive girl be?
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty dress,
Such a pretty smile,
Such a pretty me!'
Ah, it goes on and on. Then we conclude with a prozac.
Hmm... now that I think about it, maybe it's really just the prozac that helps. Try that.

LMFAO...well said mickey!
The only time I talk to god or jesus is when I'm pi$$ed off about something...for example: 'GOD FK'N DAMMIT', or 'JESUS F'KN CHRIST!'
Which is stunning proof that if I were indeed to go to hell, that I have assured my spot. Although I don't think I'd like heaven anyway...everyone seems to be playing harps there and wearing white dresses. I'll take hell thanks.
But on a serious note...I'm not religious at all. I have no use for it. IMO it's a man-made convention used to subordinate the masses and assume power by utilizing people's fear of the unknown. And it worked well too. As far as a code to live by, sure there are some good aspects to it, but taking something and using it as a life guide and making it into an organization for personal gain are two different things. You could compare the church (of any religion) to bushido. Not that I'm saying that all church-goers are ne'er do wells, but as with all things human, there are good apples, and there are bad apples.
I firmly believe that if there were a god, we'd be punished already as a species...but we're not. I fail to see how 'men of the cloth' can have sex with little boys, and god not smote them down with a lightning bolt. I don't think there is any 'hell', nor is there a divine spiritual being that is going to punish our souls when we kick the can. If there was, I seriously doubt there'd be much crime in the world, and people would follow the 10 commandments and so forth.
It also baffles me how all of a sudden in the last say 15 000 years we all of a sudden developed this sense of deitism. It seemed that we were fine while we were still more animalistic than 'human'. It was only until we as a species began to have 'deep thoughts by Jack Handy' and attributing the unexplained to some unseen force, did the idea of a 'god(s)' come about.
I just find it a difficult concept to grasp. I'm asked to believe in something that is not detectable by any of my senses...and for those that say they can 'feel' it...well I'll tell you something. The range of human emotions is quite vast, and again, feeling uplifted or invincible is not proof that the lord's will has filled your soul. The human mind is so unbelievably powerful that we forget just what we're capable of, not to mention thinking and feeling for ourselves. One might say the've felt god's love touch them...and I've also seen people set themselves on fire in protest in China. Did a 'god' have to do with either of those things? I'm leaning towards the human mind being the source for both instances of what said human mind can do, when it wants to believe or do something.
Well, i may have pissed a lot of religious people off, but remember, god says to forgive, so you're not allowed to be mad at me for very long.

hahaha! We hijacked a god thread with 80's quotes...
'I walk along the avenue
I never thought I'd meet a girl like you
With auburn hair and tormy eyes
The kind of eyes that hypnotize me through
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away
A cloud appears above your head
A beam of light comes shining down on you
The cloud is moving nearer still
Aurora borealis comes in you
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away
Reached out a hand to touch your face
You're slowly disappearing from my view
Reached out hand to try again
I'm floating in a beam of light with you
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
I couldn't get away...'

Sawweeet!! Here's another Night Tracks 80s favorite!
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our
Father wears his Sunday best
Mother's tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister's sighing in her sleep
Brother's got a date to keep
He can't hang around
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our
Our house it has a crowd
There's always something happening
And it's usually quite loud
Our mum she's so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down
And a mess is not allowed
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our...
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our...
Something tells you that you've got to get away from it......

Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
Hey JC, JC won't you smile at me?
Sanna Hosanna
Hey Superstar
(CAIAPHAS)
Tell the rabble to be quiet, we anticipate a riot.
This common crowd, is much too loud.
Tell the mob who sing your song that they are fools and they are wrong.
They are a curse. They should disperse.
(CROWD)
Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
Hey JC, JC you're alright by me
Sanna Hosanna
Hey Superstar
(JESUS)
Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd?
Nothing can be done to stop the shouting.
If every tongue were stilled
The noise would still continue.
The rocks and stone themselves would start to sing:
(CROWD AND JESUS)
Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
CROWD (alone)
Hey JC, JC won't you fight for me?
Sanna Hosanna Hey Superstar
JESUS
Sing me your songs,
But not for me alone.
Sing out for yourselves,
For you are bless-ed.
There is not one of you
Who can not win the kingdom.
The slow, the suffering,
The quick, the dead.
(CROWD and JESUS)
Hosanna
Hey Sanna Sanna Sanna Hosanna
Hey Sanna Hosanna
CROWD (alone)
Hey JC, JC won't you die for me?
Sanna Hosanna Hey Superstar
Blessed are those who believe yet have not seen...

All I wanna do when I wake up in the morning is see you eyes
Rosanna, rosanna
I never thought that a girl like you could ever care for me, rosanna
All I wanna do in the middle of the evening is hold you tight
Rosanna, rosanna
I didn’t know you were looking for more than I could ever be
Not quite a year since she went away, rosanna yeah
Now she’s gone and I have to say
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, rosanna yeah
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, rosanna yeah
I can see your face still shining through the window on the other side
Rosanna, rosanna
I didn’t know that a girl like you could make me feel so sad, rosanna
All I wanna tell you is now you’ll never ever have to compromise
Rosanna, rosanna
I never thought that losing you could ever hurt so bad
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, rosanna yeah
Meet you all the way, meet you all the way, rosanna yeah

court6478 said...
I think Court6478 says it pretty well here, i agree. i appreciate everyones views and beliefs here and that was the point of the thread. To know one and their beliefs tells alot about the person. what you believe is who you are and that is AWESOME! that's what is unique about life that we could make our own choices and live as we please. i know that one day maybe in our life time or not, there will be a day where we will all be free from religiousness and sterotypes about one another and just be...as we are....

SUPERSTAR Lyrics
VOICE OF JUDAS
Every time I look at you I don't understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand.
You'd have managed better if you'd had it planned.
Why'd you choose such a backward time in such a strange land?
If you'd come today you could have reached a whole nation.
Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication.
Don't you get me wrong.
I only want to know.
CHOIR
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you're what they say you are?
VOICE OF JUDAS
Tell me what you think about your friends at the top.
Who'd you think besides yourself's the pick of the crop?
Buddha, was he where it's at? Is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain, or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake, or
Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?
Don't you get me wrong.
I only want to know.

MARY MAGDALENE
I don't know how to love him.
What to do, how to move him.
I've been changed, yes really changed.
In these past few days, when I've seen myself,
I seem like someone else.
I don't know how to take this.
I don't see why he moves me.
He's a man. He's just a man.
And I've had so many men before,
In very many ways,
He's just one more.
Should I bring him down?
Should I scream and shout?
Should I speak of love,
Let my feelings out?
I never thought I'd come to this.
What's it all about?
Don't you think it's rather funny,
I should be in this position.
I'm the one who's always been
So calm, so cool, no lover's fool,
Running every show.
He scares me so.
I never thought I'd come to this.
What's it all about?
Yet, if he said he loved me,
I'd be lost. I'd be frightened.
I couldn't cope, just couldn't cope.
I'd turn my head. I'd back away.
I wouldn't want to know.
He scares me so.
I want him so.
I love him so.

For those who do not know...
Tapioca is basically a root starch derived from the cassava, or yuca plant. It's often used to thicken soups and sweeten the flavor of baked goods, and it makes a dandy pudding.
The cassava plant is native to South America and the West Indies, where its thick, fibrous roots are used in a variety of forms: bread flour, laundry starch, an alcoholic brew, and of course, tapioca pudding. As the Encyclopedia Britannica tells us, it was probably first harvested by the Mayans.
Budi Acid Jaya, a tapioca starch producer in Indonesia, uses processed cassava roots to make raw materials for crackers, toothpaste, paper, and textiles. Visit the site for an overview of the starch production process. It involves lots of heat and water.
We suggest you don't try making your own tapioca at home. Cassava roots have traces of cyanide in them! The ever-resourceful Mayans figured out how to extract this poison for their blow darts, leaving the uncontaminated roots free for eating.
!!!And I Too Know the Lost Secret of the Mayans!!! Waaajajajajajajaja!!!</font>

Back to the topic, I was raised as an atheist which suited me fine (though i did go to a christian school! - nightmare by the way) and i was fairly sure that i would remain one for my life. While i was in SE Asia though, i started reading about Bhudism. Wow, what a great way of life, not necessarily following the teachings to the word but if i understood correctly, that is not what it is about.
I liked the fact that 'Bhudda' made it clear that he was not to be seen as a god, there would be no alters or holy shrines and it was merely a way of living life that worked for him. He also wrote that it would be a way of life that would evolve with changes in society. Seems reasonable to me. Instead of having 'silly' or 'dated' rules that are no longer practical, the rules 'evolve' in a sensible way.
I don't think i would ever give up all my posessions and give up on the material world, or meditate for 80% of the day, but, It seems like the most morally correct 'religion' i have every read about and seems to fit in with being a good (and also realistic) person.
It was very interesting to me as i found it EXTREMELY hard to understand how people can believe in other religions (Understand, not accept).
Mike.
