corbis - if you can afford them.
ArtRes too if you need quick access to photos of artwork (remember though that even though the painting may have long passed into Public Domain, the Photographer still owns the rights to his photo of the painting).

What kind of images? There are a lot of specialty sites out there too. I do a lot of historical image searching and image sites can get very specialized.

i'm doing a tri-fold brochure and postcard for this company that is focusing on a religious audience. they want a couple images of, what they call "awesomeiness." they explained these images to be of God's creations, (landscapes such as: they mentioned the grand canyon, sunsets, one of the great wonders of the world -- in their own words) so i'm trying to find an image that has bright sun light, good contrast, landscapes images taken in the daytime or at sunrise/sunset.

any suggestions for stock photography websites for those type of images?

thanks for all the suggestions and help!

istockphoto.com is what we use. The rates are very reasonable. Any cheaper and they would be for free. Maximum you can pay per image is $5US and that's for the highest res file.

They also have great features like sorting by colour as well as clear/blank areas for text. Say if you need an image for a brochure front, you plan on having text to go across the top of the image. You can select the top of the photo to have blank space. Then search. istock will spit out all images meeting your criteria with blank area at the top. You can also do the side or the middle...it's great!
