I want to type an inch or a foot mark in Illustrator. Now I've found a few convoluted methods of doing this ... but there's got to be a quicker way. If anyone could help, that would be great.

Illustrator CS2, Mac OSX 10.3.9

You can turn of Typographers Quotations in InDesign, not sure about illustrator.

Otherwise just use the keyboard shortcuts:
Option-[
(for left quote)

Option-Shift-[
(for right quote)

edit: hmmm... just realised that there shouldn't be a left and right, oh well try them and let us know. I'm not at my mac.

Once again, I've found that you can go into document setup, and choose type form the drop down and then uncheck the "use typographer's quotes" box, and you're good to go (it doesn't change any smart quotes that are already there). But, it's still a lot of steps to do something pretty simple (in my opinion).

So, if anyone knows a simple way, that would be awesome. Thanks.

You could try to xport the text and then re-import the text with smart quotes turned off?

Just use the Glyphs palette. The inch mark is GID 2, and the foot mark is GID 103.

If you use these characters a lot, then you can create a glyph set using the Glyphs palette flyout menu.

That'll work, thanks.

BK, I only see the footmark in my Glyphs palette, is it specific to certain fonts?

BK, I only see the footmark in my Glyphs palette, is it specific to certain fonts?Actually, they should both be there, but just ignore what I said about the GID numbers. It seems that changes from font vendor to font vendor.

For example, for Apple's .dfont files, the GID for inch marks is 5, and the GID for the foot mark is 10. For Adobe PostScript fonts, the GID is 2 and 103 for these marks. For other vendors, it may be something else. So, for each font, you need to search for the marks that you want.

easy- opt shift g is for inch, and opt shift e for foot, works like a charm for me, no export no import :)

Great shortcuts, Shari, but who can keep those crazy shortcuts in memory if you're not using them all the time? Honestly, why G and E - can't they use something like, say, I and F!?

Shari, those gave me slanted primes and double primes. I've always done them as straight up and down quotes.
