Hey Zartan.
Done freehand with the pen tool in illustrator. It was the back inside 'coming soon' page for a local mag. I really ought to say that on the website. Hmmm... maybe later. very sleepy.

hey flashlight, your illustration work is excellent. but, as i stated before, your work stands out above the site design. i think it's the closeup of the eye that just dominates the design. it becomes the focal point rather than the work or the navigation. the navigation gives off a template feel and isn't polished, as opposed to your other work. one last note, the text below the 'patterns emerged' graphic on the right is too small and difficult to read. the only thing i could make out is the 'patterns emerged' text in red.
by the way, i love the flaming brain piece. excellent portfolio ...

yea I agree with 3howards...when i first saw that eye i almost jumped outta my seat lol.....I think mabye even just putting it back into photoshop and modifying it with differnt colors and messin with it would probably help hehe.

Wow. What a day.
I showed my site around to a couple of senior designers and art directors I've recently met, and asked them to 'tell me why it sucks'. So they did.
In short, we decided that there is too much risk with humor. And they repeated (in somewhat harsher words than 3howards) that the design was amateurish.
So back to the drawing board. And how here I am, it's 12 hours later and the thing is just about done (again). The reason for the rush is that I'm about to put my computer away for about 10 days while I move cross country. I've applied for a couple of positions, and I want to have something decent showing while I'm away.
So without further ado, I present you with www.flashlightdesign.com (http://www.flashlightdesign.com)
For those playing along at home, the older site is here www.peterflaschner.com (http://www.peterflaschner.com)
Now, sleep.

i liked the 'old dude' one, but i honestly think the new one will serve you better to find work in tdot. don't forget that it's the financial capital, so the suits on bay street are all about the bottom line and have been known to be scared by whimsy. that will often carry over to art directors and hr personnel.
the new one will work - you'll be fine once you get out here.
well done!

I preferred the colours and logo in the original one. Especially the logo.

I kinda like the older one better because it's more 'fun' to me, but I'm not your target audience, am I? So I agree with uncle. If art directors prefer the new one, then it should serve you well to get what you need. Plus the new one loads faster, which is a very good thing because you don't want to lose to the short attention spans of your prospective employers. http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/emoticons/happy.gif
Couple of things... In the home page, you need to drop the "d" in "served." It should read "Thank you for your patience while we renovate to serve you better." Also, I think you should somehow categorize the items listed in your Portfolio page, i.e. have "LOGOS" next to the list of links to your logos.
Have a safe move, and good luck with the job hunt. :)

Unless you just change the whole sentence: 'You got serverd!'
I agree with everyone else, this one is more professional and not nearly as personal. Why not have both? Put a link in there somewhere along the lines of, 'Want to see my lighter side?'
Oh, and I'm not sold on the rule showing up when you rollover your logo. It makes me feel like something was supposed to drop down and didn't. I like the rule in the design though, I'd make it a permenent element.

I liked your 'Patterns Emerged'. It was very insightful and interesting.
You can take a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a bull's ass, but wouldn't you rather take the butcher's word for it?

thanks everyone! I will be working on the site over the next couple of weeks, and posting updates for critique. It is sooooo helpful.
As an aside, it seems the new site works! I got a job, starting quite literally the moment I move into the new town... RELIEF.
