This one familiar to anybody?
I got a file from an old client that switched over to Indy CS2 from Indy CS. Now his type is completely dropping out wherever there's an "fi" or "fl", just like us old print guys remember from lead type.
Am I missing a setting?
Many thanks!

Was ligatures on/off? It seems like it's not loading the ligatures. I don't know how you remedy it, but hopefully I helped narrow down the problem.

Rick,
Did you check the 'Open Type Features' setings for the affected paragraph tags? I seem to recall that there's some kind of structural change in how they structured this area between the two versions that effects ligatures.

In the Character tab you can turn ligatures on and off.

OK, this one is set to[Contextual Alternates] and [Default Figure Style].
Font is good ole Arial, which wasn't that much an issue in CS.

That's the ticket! Thanks, Mynock.
Good lord they made things more difficult with CS2. Seems Micro-Adobe-Soft'ish.
Thanks, guys

Thanks, guysWow, I got to help out the great prepress grampa and elf. It's like it wasn't recognizing/loading the ligatures. Weird.

I'm kinda spooked now...is that a font thing, particular to each font and/or foundry? Does Arial OTF, Arial TT and Arial T1 all have the same ligature attributes?? Maybe the client used TT and I have OTF?
Gotta love prepress.

Arial is one of the fonts that, by default, can be subject to 'updating' depending (of all things) on the settings of Internet Explorer, which by default is set to inject foreign characters into the character set of certain fonts, as web browsing needs demand. It all adds up to a mess if you use it in prepress. It's easy to spot: if your version is a different size (usually much smaller) than the person handing off, that's your clue.

Thanks, Broacher.
Arial was always one of my favorites!
Prolly one of the only font's you can find on each and every computer in the world!
Has anybody (I'm sure someone has) posted or referenced a list of the must have system fonts on the peecee?

Strictly speaking, I don't believe Arial would natively have ligatures, so perhaps something changed in the way Indy CS2 interprets. Good to know in case it happens to me!

It's mostly serif fonts that have ligatures - proper ones, I haven't seen any free fonts with proper ligatures.
I had a font (a free font) that converted all instances of "qu" into an "s" it drove me nutty until I realised that it was a ligature!

Yeah, back in the day when I had Fontographer, you'd open up a font and the serifs had an actual character mapped into a position that would appear if you turned ligatures on in your page layout (or other) program. None of the sans-serif fonts had characters mapped there, but most of the page layout programs would ignore the call for a ligature in those instances. Sounds like Indy CS2 has trouble with that.

Here's one. It took me a few searches on my HD to find the right one.
