Gradient problem in Illustrator CS

OK - here's what I can't figure out...

I am trying to put a gradient into text from left ro right. I convert the text to outlines and insert the gradient. When I do this, the gradient goes from start to finish in each letter - not across the entire word. For example - if using hte rainbow gradient - each letter has the complete spectrum in it, instead of the the entire spectrum going into the entire word. I hope this makes sense, and I REALLY hope someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I've even tried making a clipping mask with the letters and a shape containing the gradient. Help!

you need to select your text, and using the gradient tool, click on the starting point where you want your gradient, and drag until you are where you want your gradient to end and release. By default, if you have more than one object selected, the gradient will start and finish in each individual item.
