Hi there,
As many of you might now, I usually specialise in work for the music industry (CD covers, vinyl sleeves and labels, nightclub flyers and promotional material etc). Well I've just finished my first piece of design for a (very posh) restaurant. It's a half-page magazine advert for a glossy magazine, to promote their new autumn menu's.
Comments appreciated.
(yes I know I've used futura, but that's what they wanted :D)

Whats wrong with Futura? I think it looks pretty - excuse the pun - tasty!

i like it, although the text seems a bit condensed in the upper left corner... is there a way you could break it up, maybe throw some towards the bottom right to space it out?

I agree with YDR, I like Futura. And I think it works well for this piece.
Nice work.

I like Futura too.
Only thing I have to say is it too me longer than 5 seconds to figure out the name of the resaturant.
Maybe knock the patten back a tiny bit so it doesn't compete with the text so much?
Great job though. Be proud of this one!

I think Futura looks great with this piece.... great color choices as well ;)
I really like the color combination, so warm and rich just in time for fall.

Alex, I dig your style, I love everything you post including this one but I just dont see it as the right style of design for a resturant unless this is a trendy/club style restuarant that caters to young and hip people. Futura really looks nice for it though.

camarota - you're bang on the money actually. It's a very posh, yet trendy place. Aside from being a restaurant its a very busy bar. As well as being a designer, I run Myhouse-Yourhouse Entertainment Inc (online webcasting, global events and record label). We held our first Birthday celebration there in July which ran from 3pm till 2am, featured 13DJs from the radio and was transmitted live globally on the web....
(these photographs show the roof terrace, not the restaurant area obviously)

Awesome, Alex. In light of the new information and looking at the photos. I think the design is perfect, great work, as usual.

Looks sharp.
I like the colour scheme and the type treatment works well. My only nag is the bevel on the flourishes (and bar) Why?
It just seems a little out of place, it doesn't ruin the design or anything, I'm just wondering why you decided to put it in?

I originally did it with the flourishes flat and they just seemed a bit slapped on. although its not too clear to see on the preview i've used an embossing effect. Normally i'd steer clear of thsi sort of thing but this time I felt it worked.

That was going to be my comment as well. I think it would have worked just fine with out the bevel - the color and layout is plenty strong.
The business name is really hard to find though. With all the other ads in this mag, it might get lost.
very nice piece, totally fits the client. Great job.

This is a nice piece.
I like the name of the restaurant.
I like the way you've used the flower elements, you've made very good colour choices too.

i dont mind futura... if it were me id be tempted to lose the bevel off the plants i think theyd look stronger as flat vectors, but thats only a tiny niggle

The food network channel has been using a similar vector foliage type design recently, mainly in greens though and animated between programs, so you may well have hit the nail on the head as far as appealing to the foody type.

Maybe I'm not 'trendy' but my question is, when does type become too large in a small space? Does anyone else have a hard time with NEW MENUS being too overpowering in a too fine-stroked font?

Not sure if you mean the same thing...
I see text taking over for the sake of reading rather than to for appeal and suitability lately. But in this case Futura works.
