This logo is for a bohemian/self published magazine that will feature artwork/photography, writing and poetry. Most of the poetry is hip hop/slam style, very edgy and rough. The client really likes hip hop music and orange and green are his favorite colors. I thought this would work well. He likes the ink splatter from a previous design, but wanted a different font.

Thoughts?

I Like the style.

The dots on the jar are distracting. What are they meant to be?

The text at the bottom needs kerning adjustment.

I know this is a minor thingy:The splash extends to my left, how about a random spot out to the right as well. "Cut" a ragged white space between the "J" and "A" in "JAR" as you have between the "L" and "T" in "LT".

Allow me to suggest you keep the orange solid.

They're fire flies.

The font for me is - well I'm not one way or another - it's not great, but it's not bad.

The gradient is bugging me. Makes everything too washy. I'd expect, with the target you're trying to reach, that you'd want to make a bold statement. The splatter gets that done, but then the gradient just fades it away. Try the same orange, but solid.

It doesn't scream bohemian or poetry to me. It looks modern...perhaps research some of the bohemian movement and incorporate that into your own style for the logo. Remember, the logo should express the feel of the magazine, and I don't think you are there yet.

This logo is clean and good though, don't think I am coming down on it.

It's got a bit of an MTV feel to it, but I really like it.

I'd get rid of the roughness of the jar, and improve those stains in tha jar. Jar Jar jar.

The composition of elements is very nice. And the gradient fits.

I would make the splashes more splash like. I realise you want a vector feel to this, but how about scanning some splatters and then live trace?

Thanks for the critique everyone, I havent had time to work on this, but I'll definately be incorporating your ideas.

Mac - Yeah, they are fireflies, glad you can tell.

I'm also not crazy about the font, but its much less grungier than the previous one, which the client didn't especially want. The gradient might come out, or it might become very subtle. I think it will work pretty well actually because the front cover is going to have an organge - redish orange gradient background. (im addicted to gradients right now.. need gradient therepy)

I'll post some stuff with the complete cover and all that when I get a chance, until then, any more critiques are welcome.

I'd like to see this with the jar icon reduced. I think its acting like a letter and taking away from the type. I'd also like to see a non-gradient version of the type.

Is it a real ink splash? if not have you tried a real one, I think they are one of the hardest things to replicate.

Doesn't look like a real ink splash as bit's are repeated as though it's been mirrored/flipped and then furckled with.

Furckle is a new word that I vote should be used to describe the act of "titting around" with something graphically. e.g. I furckled about with the contrast.

I also vote that we should employ another word from my very own new dictionary. Fangle will now be used to describe when one mangles and forces something in a graphical context, e.g. I had to fangle the text to make it fit.

Please feel free to add new words and thier meanings to our "GDF dictionary". and now I'm going to bed as I think I may be overly tired.

Ok, ok, ok, you guys have all made your points well about the ink splatter. I'll go spill some ink now.

fwiw: The furkled ink splatter looks better with the grungier font I was using, maybe I'll post that design later... back to work now ;)

If you don't mind me asking, what font did you use?

Ryan, The Font is Gothic 821 Condensed.

Ok Everyone, here is the second round of revisions, sans ink splatter. The client likes these new ones, but we're still wanting to incorporate the splatter, what do you guys think?

I like the first one or the last one. For the last one I would make that point more pronounced so that it looks more like a speech bubble.

I'm not fond of your fireflies drawing at all. If you must use them, they need more work.
