I am new to to indesign and I have encountered a problem that I cannot find an answer for. I am creating a 10 page document with text and a few graphic figures. I need to place a figure legend on top of the graphic box--seems simple. I have done this in a previous document.

In my new document, the text disappears when I try to move it over the graphic box. However, if I paste a similar figure legend from a previous document into my new document it behaves correctly. I cannot find a way to change the attributes of any new text box I create so that it is visible when placed on top of the graphic box. I have tried to copy the attributes of the imported figure legend but nothing makes the new one behave. I have sent it to the front, I have changed it from a text box to "none".

I am at a loss. Why does an imported version work but the newly created one does not?

Any help would be appreciated. I have spent hours in the various help books, but have found no clue.

It sounds like you have a text wrap on your image.

Open the text wrap pallete, click on your graphic so it is highlighted. Choose the first picture icon (no text wrap).

Failing that, can you post a screenshot?

It's also possible that the text frame for the figure legend you're pasting has Ignore Text Wrap checked on, whereas the text frame for your new legend has it checked off. Under Object>Text Frame Options, check on Ignore Text Wrap.

Edit: You can also set your InDesign preferences to either ignore or obey text wraps if a text object is in the front, under Preferences>Composition>Text Wrap Only Affects Text Beneath.

Why yes, we do!

I've been talking to my bf about how great this place is and how at home I feel at GDF. I think he's happy that I don't have to talk technical design to him anymore because he doesn't really get it so much. He's more traditional illustrator than graphic designer. GD geeks unite!
