What do you pc users use for email?
We have a salesman here that got his new PC set up 6 months ago. Now his email app (MS Outlook) has expired and MS wants to hose us $150 to upgrade to the Student el deluxo version. Screwed by Microsoft again?
I don't think it can be like Yahoo mail or web based like that because he's sending quotes and receiving files and stuff.
Thanks all!

You should be able to set a browser up to function as an email client..... opera, mozilla, netscape.... all should function with POP accounts...I think.
I use Incredimail. There is a free version, but I have the upgraded version, I think around $50 bucks. http://www.incredimail.com/english/splash/splash.asp

If you don't need something robust, wouldn't Outlook Express do it?
Outlook isn't free anymore?
I use Netscape from my old version 7. Does anybody use Thunderbird from Firefox?

I think that Eudora is still around. They were 'da bomb' back in '95 when I was in college. It was free, but I think that they have a small fee now.

Oh, I thought the $150 was for Outlook, not Outlook Express. Dang, not sure then.

Now I'm confused. Express is different thatn just plain Outlook?
EC - IncrediMail looks fun...he may like this!

Yeah, the robust version of Outlook has all sorts of different features, Outlook Express is a 'lite' version of it. Everyone here at work has Outlook, I have Express, and personally I don't need the full version. It's Adobe's Photoshop Elements to Adobe Photoshop.

Aren't they the same thing? I never heard of having to pay for outlook, it was always a big ordeal just trying to get rid of it LOL. I guess Bill is down to his last hundred billion or so and needs some more cash. :)

I found a link on Microsuck's website on the difference between the two, and suprise suprise the page is broken in my Firefox browser. You'd think I'd use IE to find the rest of the info, but not so much.

It is fun. You can do sound effects, you can set a character to come out and tell you when you have mail, you can set different backgrounds (I have one for my business that I custom-made), cool smileys -- you know, the important stuff. lol
Other than the calendaring feature, the mail portion is almost exactly the same as Outlook (you can set up folders to organize and whatnot).

It has the same look and feel as Outlook. But can you have the little paperclip guy dance on the screen when you have a question, tho? Or that's prolly a Microsoft patent!!

I used to be perfectly happy with the mail program that came with Netscape, but since I upgraded to 8, it seems to have been eliminated. Unless I'm just too stupid to figure out how to get to it (entirely possible I suppose). Both of my email accounts have easy web access, so that's what I've been doing. Saves a little room on the hard drive anyway.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll turn the salesman on to IncrediMail. It will also upload all the info from his addressbook in Outlook, so that will save him (me) from a lot of extra work.

Outlook always costs money, outlook express comes with windows.
Outlook can set up calanders with scheduled appointments, tasks that link to other people on a network, notes, a much more robust mail program and a host of other in depth features that Outlook express can't do.
I find I use a lot of Outlooks features and have looked around but no other program matches it.
If you just need a program to read email anything will do, Outlook goes much further.

I've been using The Bat! (home, $35, pro, $45) for about 5 or 6 months now, and I'm VERY impressed. I still haven't used all it's features, and it uses very little resource. No crashes either.

Yep, that's it. Fantastic feature set for someone in my job. User variables, templates on a per address basis, meaning you can set up templates for anyone and everyone in your addy book. You can have a bunch of set reply templates if you get the same types of questions over and over (as I do), and it even pulls the user first name from the email and puts it into the email. All with a click or 2. Terrific program.
Folders can be set for auto-compression on exit to keep storage size down. Built in selectable skins. Lots more features I haven't even discovered yet.

I like Outlook, the tasks/calender functions are handy if you are as forgetful as I am. Although right now I'm using Outlook express, which is fine if your just collecting email. Thunderbird is good too...pretty much the same as Outlook express.
