I'm trying to figure out how I can take a photograph of an object and make it look like its woodcut. Does anyone have any tips? I'm not really looking for a magic filter, lest you think I'm lazy. I'm looking for a series of steps that I can take to get the desired effect. I would love to just do it myself, but I don't really think I could get it to look professional enough for what I need.

Thanks!

can you explain woodcut?

there was a reallly good tutorial on wood burning up here before, but I'm not sure what woodcutting would look like.

edit: Nevermind. I know what a woodcut is. My brain just isn't working today.

I haven't tried this one, but it looks fantastic.

Here you go:

I'm kind of getting it. I'm adjusting the brightness/contrast of the image. Then converting it to halftone paper with a setting of lines. Then I'm gonna go erase certain areas to get the proper line look. It doesn't have to look exactly like a woodcut, but very similar. I'll post what I have when I get it finished. Once I'm finished in photoshop I'm gonna make a path and suck it into illustrator. If anyone has better suggestions, I'll be happy to try them.

Not sure how good either of these are, but might be worth a look. I like some of the free actions because you can expand the action window and see each step and how they got to the final result and then you can pick it appart and do your own version to fit what you really need.

Have you considered actually doing the woodcut yourself? You can cheat a bit and copy the picture to linoleum instead of wood. It's much easier to cut. Also you don't have to have a press to print woodcuts so it can be done at home.

Obviously I'm not being helpful, I just have a love for printmaking.;)

Thanks Emberleo! I think I mentioned above that I can do it, I don't however think that I will get results that look professional enough for this project. I like doing them too, but they don't always cooperate with me and certainly not with my deadlines!! I'll post my results tomorrow after a few revisions.

Haha, of course they don't. Just call me a dreamer.;) And apparently I didn't read the last sentence of your post, eh? Anyways good luck. I'm interested to see what you come up with.

I don't know if this is covered in any of the tutorial links but I've had good luck using a heavy sharpen filter then a threshold adjustment layer.
