OK, heres a logo Ive been working on for a liquor store that focuses on their wine selection. (Thats why it looks more like a wine logo than a liquor store logo... thats what they wanted) I have a few more variations but this is what its coming down to...

Thoughts?? (Thanks everyone!)

My overall feeling is that the bunch of grapes looks lost in all the examples you've given. Have you thought about maybe making the lettering more vine-like and somehow attaching the grapes to the vine? I don't know if you could make that work- just an idea.

They seem a bit disconnected. They need to be tied together more I think

alex, i tried some stuff like that but they didnt really like it, they wanted somehting more simple.

this will mostly just be in their weekly ad in the milwaukee paper

of these I like #5.

But I agree they're not connecting very well. Still I could see #5 as a small town wine store logo.

Why not try a more abstract grape bunch?

I'm with mac. #5 is the best so far. I'd decrease the kerning of Ray's to make it a little more togther. Keep us posted!

#5 is my choice...agree with above comments

#5

I agree with the rest; more abstract grapes, #5 and tighter kerning.

I'm also thinking the font doesn't fit. The font looks like it's in between calligraphic and grotesque. What about trying a more pure calligraphic font? It would be pointing directly at wine, but a whole finger is better than two half ones - or something. I think you should fill in the branch the grapes are on. At some sizes you can only see a few white pixels in there you're better of without.

#5....but I don't know much about grapes, so it looks good to me!

The grapes are too boring. They are static. They all have the same thickness and the line weight is solid all the way around. Try a different stroke or some stylizing.

I like #4 the best. I think the intigration of the elements is the strongest. The leg of the R points to the 'wine & spirits" and the grapes are nestled nicely in that space below the R.

I'd try the following and see what happens; Make the "&" in "wine & spirits" a little smaller, it pops out a little too much for me. Try the "ay's" a few points smaller as well. I like the look of the lowercase letters in #5, but descender on the y in combination with the tail of the a and the leg of the R is what bothers me. There are two "holes" or white spaces in your bunch of grapes, it may be easier to fill that with black, especially if the grapes get colored. The space where the left leg of the R and the bunch of grapes meet is funky to me, maybe make that leg a little longer and move it to the left.

Geez I re-read that and I'm really picking nits aren't I. Anyway it's my two cents.

OK, well how can I get the client to go for more abstract grapes? He wants it to be so boring. I had some grapes with different brush strokes, different weights, only semicircles instead of full, dots; he just wants it to "Be obvious that its a bunch of grapes" any suggestions how to help convince him this is too boring?

Maybe try to convey that different styles of grapes can convey different feelings and say different things about his shop. As it stands that bunch of grapes tells me 'old school no frills liquor store' Does he want to be modern or trendy? or does he have a personality for his shop? How does he want to be viewed kind of thing.

I imagine it would look best if you could get away with something like this:

Only in Illy and much smoother, ofcourse. More varied thickness of the strokes than in my sketch, open circles, but still pretty closed as a whole, and a piece of the branch sticking out a fitting place. Or is just like what you tried already? :/

i tried something like that, trying to make different weights so it fit with the font better, that was all in previous steps, maybe I should revisit it though, even though he didnt like it initially, now that we ahve a more specific design down I can integrate it and show him how it will look now?

I think that sounds like a good idea

I haven't read all the comments. Have you tried using the descenders of the 'R' as the grape stem, and have the grapes branch off of that?

Jackimalyn

ooh i like that reuber... I love this forum... these are givin me new ideas too. Ill post more work in the next few days.

Am I strange or what? I don't like 5. I like 2.

yep, You sure are strange buda ;) 5 is the best!!!!

I like it. It is very simple and a tad boring to me, but I think a few embellishments, playing with color, doing what reuber said, maybe throwing in an ornamental flourish is all it will need to lose the boringness and still be simple.

Maybe I just need to see it with these said embellishments the :D

How about keeping the text, losing the grapes all together and enclosing the text in a traditional wine grape farm signage...hope I make sense.

Here is what I mean:

Here are a few other grape logos may give you a few ideas as to what's been done with grape shapes before..

Another thing I thought may be trying to incorporate a bottle similar to this illustration..

Hope they help

yeah #2 is definitely the solid app IMO

yeah...just tell him..."hey man...you are good at wine...i am good at design...have you ever had a customer come in and hate a type of wine and you convinced him to try this one brand out and he wound up loving it? same principle applies here...just because you have something in your mind, doesnt mean that what i have in my mind wont be kickass"

you guys will have to forgive me...i am very southern

#5 is the one that caught my attention immediately and it seems to flow/read the best. My concern would be if the treatment is heavy/bold enough to be clearly read as signage from the street if such an application is required.

If you squeeze the grapes together a little and add a stroke I think it'll look better. Like this:

If you squeeze the grapes jm they will burst and spill all over the place...:D

yeah forget it, that would get messy, then they'd have to pay you extra.

Do you have to have the grapes? Why not try a complete typographical solution?

I really like the dashwood wine logo. It's the mark a wine glass makes on all your furniture that you've set it on after a few too many glasses of wine...
