Just wondering what type of paper/card I should be using, and what colours i should be working in. :)

Your question is much too vague. What type of piece are you trying to do? Are you designing an entire magazine, or just something that will appear in a magazine? Are you asking for color choices or whether to work in RGB or CMYK (choose CMYK for printing).
If you provide more specifics in your question, you'll get more answers that will be useful to you. As it stands, your question doesn't really convey enough about what you're asking.
