What happens when you've run out of ideas or a project?
Specifically, I'm having a brain blackout when it comes to this logo I'm working on. I started sketching about a year ago, have done a number of computer sketches, and still no one is happy with the resulting logo. Not me or my clients.
I'm wondering if it is just because I'm honestly not very good at being an illustrator. I can certainly draw, but not illustrate. I can't really "see" things in my head, I have to see it in real life first then I can draw what I see.
Should I expect that if i just keep sketching and researching other logos that I'll eventually find a good solution? Or, is it that if I haven't found a solution by now, I'm not going to find one?
Being an artist and being creative are two completely seperate things, in my opinion. For instance, I am not good at drawing objects from my head, I have to see them. Once I see a subject though, I can draw it spot-on. Does that mean I am not an artist? Other times I have an amazing idea in my head but I just cant seem to get it on paper. Does that mean I am not creative?
Just because you have not found the idea yet does not mean that you wont. When you are walking down a hallway, do you stop half way and give up because you have not reached the end yet? Don't give up. If you cant seem to come up with the idea yourself, there is no shame in turning to others for help. You could even post your ideas here and we might be able to give you some suggestions.

Not sure what to tell you. When it comes to designing a logo I always have a process. I research. I do 10-40 hand drawn sketches and then I narrow it down to the top 10. I then meet with the client and see if they like any of them or elements from some. I do all of this before I get on the computer.
Then I try and combine elements from the ten I have to make what they want. It usually saves me some time on the computer. Then I can jump on the computer and rip it out fairly quickly.
Have they given you any direction on what they are looking for? A year long process is way too long for a logo. If you have run out of ideas I would recommend talking to your graphic design friends or hit the library and do some research. I find getting away from the internet helps me a great deal.
Cheers!

Is this logo for you or a client? A year is a long time for a client. For ones self, not really that suprising.

It's a logo for my employer, a high school district. I've posted the old logo and my new one here in two threads already, so I think I've exhausted any advice from members of this forum.
I'm the same as M said above: I can't draw objects from my head, I have to see them.
The clients (school board) want a logo that communicates "education," "excellence," and "high school" (as opposed to elementary school). I won't get into why this project is spanning over a year, but I can say that I've many pages of sketches and doodles. The client likes the idea of a graduation cap being somewhere in the logo, but I haven't been able to sketch the right combination of type and the form of the graduation cap.
The logo that I ultimately designed is a letter T that takes the form of a graduate reaching for the stars. The problem, however, is that it is too elementary and not robust. I think the fact that I've turned a letter into a person contributes to the "elementary" message. So I think I need to scrap that idea.
