Consultation is expensive. Talk to a lawyer for five minutes and he'll be addin up the dollars. Are there graphic design consultants who do that for a living??
We "give away" critiques on here all the time, Im not saying I have a problem with that, or that we should be charging eacholer... but should we?? Is it almost like spec work?? Free consultation? I just thought it was trange the more I thought about it. Maybe I should get back to work though....

Thoughts??

It's more sharing than giving away here though. I certainly learn from other peoples' mistakes as well as my own. If someone posted their business logo here asking for critique and they weren't a designer or responsible for the work then that would be free consulting and in my opinion not right.

I think a lot of it has to do with giving back at least as much as you get too.

I wouldn't feel right about asking everyone for crits if I weren't giving input too.

good calls. Give and take. and yea, guess i didnt think of that, it is our work. If it were a company looking for consultation on their own logo or w/e that wouldnt be right

There are graphic consultants. We hire out to do that.
If you want help on your exhibit graphics or construction (museum/tradeshow/corporate meeting/etc) and want our ideas, ideas are money.

Cost evaluation and value engineering are also paid services.

We do R&D too.

When you do that stuff for free in the hopes of getting awarded a job - THAT is spec work.

The GDF is not really a consultancy. Though there is some stuff on here that floats over into the consultancy area. Not too far though if you've noticed at all.

I think it's great that we have freedom to give crit. If we had to pay for it, we might demand credentials etc, and also if there is crit given that is "wrong" then we are liable for damages.

I think secretly we enjoy this work...

We do have people that are not designers ask for critiques on their attempts at desgning their own stuff - and it is very obvious to all of us that this person is not a designer, yet this person has been given a lot of free advice and I must say, extremely polite free advice at that. I admire some people's tact on this site when it comes to that.

There are people who act as consultants.

In my own firm tho - your first consultation is free. Beyond that, it's contract time and then we'll hammer out more particulars.

If you really think about it, this site is a boon to all the hacks out there with a comp and Adobe CS. You don't think all those Guests in the Who's Online list are in there by accident, right?
