Anybody have a great combo of 2 sans serifs for a brochure?

I'm looking for a very clean look with a serious appeal and a touch of modernism!

I was thinking :

- Sub titles NewsGotMed, 13pt (I know! I dare use an odd font size)

- text Swiss712 LtCn Bt, 10pt but at 90% vertical scale (it's a little to strong and 100%, it overshadows). It looks alright, however it just isn't perfect enough!

I also have to keep everything in a 3,5" pannel (3" width text box); so it can't be too big.

Oye! the joys of formatting!

How much body text do you have? To be honest, I'm not crazy about the idea of condensing an already condensed font to begin with, and for body copy, if it's a lot of copy, I think it's going to be hard to read. Or if not hard to read, at least off-putting, making people not want to read it, which is the more important part of that comment.

Must both fonts be sans-serif? Frankly, for one block of body copy, sans-serif is okay, but if it's paragraph after paragraph, I think serif is a better way to go.

I personally prefer to mix my font types within a piece - like a serif for the header and a sans for the body or vice versa. I think it makes for a better distinction between the two styles. If you're set on the idea of sans for both, perhaps use two fonts within the same family, but in different styles, i.e. Helvetica's medium extended for titling and light condensed for body. That might look more consistent and keep your choice from looking like you meant to use the same font but made a mistake and didn't.

lol... Though I'm somewhat obsessive-cumpulsive about the point size I use (I strongly prefer nice round even numbers, especially multiples of 12), the truth is it just doesn't matter. Use the size that works, even if it's 23.62584 points.:D

I agree with urst on this. If you have to scale a font to make it look the way you want it, then it's probably the wrong font. Try to reserve the scaling for instances where you have to make a block of text fit within a set space. I periodically do Spanish translations of selling guides for a cosmetics company. Since Spanish is much wordier than English and the translated version has to keep the exact same layout as the English, there are times where you have to "coax" a paragraph to fit into the allotted space - if tracking doesn't quite do it, then I'll scale it. Otherwise, I almost never use it.

I'm not obsessive at all with font pt sizing. I don't even use whole numbers half the time. Especially for busi cards. Whatever works works.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with 13 point type. First of all, let's say you force yourself into using twelve point type all the time. Here's an example of twelve point type in a few different typefaces:

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7964/picture2gc4.jpg

The point is that point size doesn't matter, really, since all typefaces are drawn with their own sense of proportion/cap height, etc. So it's the optical size that matters, not the point size.

LOL, Virgo. :D

My point was to demonstrate that point size doesn't matter. So many typefaces are drawn/created with different cap to x-height proportions, if they have upper and lower case for example. Or if it's an all caps fonts, that's going to look a certain way too.

To judge something by its pointsize is just a wrong use of fonts, IMO.

Font geek to the exponential power times two! boomBLAMO!

How the heck does a thread about serif/sans serif fonts get derailed and become risque?

Fascinating.

Fascinating.

We in the advertising design field have been far too long taught that "sex sells", and it is difficult for us to stray away from that path. :)

Same here. Fonts and furniture catalogues make me hot.

The new Comptuer Arts magazine = sexy. It's all on type. *drools* Too bad it's $31NZ I just can't justify paying that much for a magazine, even if it is all on sexy type.

Good job, Virgo and Buda. Don't know why I used Times, but I wasn't really thinking about my font choices, was just slapping together a quickie example. I'm kinda over Times Roman.

I do like Garamond, I just try not to use it all the time, otherwise it gets overdone. I also like Sabon, and Adobe Jenson Pro is lurvely.

I like Garamond for it's low x height. Jenson has it too, but anything else just doesn't look as good in a serif IMO...
