i have never seen any cosmetics type work in the direction you are trying to go
well...besides the cosmetics you find in the toy section of wal mart that is selling to 8 year olds
i think the message youre conveying is off

interesting enough, these people often do make up for prom's, parties, weddings, etc. etc. etc. they even have after hours parties for middle school aged girls. their target market is young girls and women id say 40 years old and younger.
i got a stack full of cosmo and vogue here, and all i see for the most part is the same ol thing rehashed for every BIG NAME cosmetics company. wow a picture of the product, a picture of a model, and a sentence or two of type.
i like your first sentence king: i have never seen any cosmetics type work in the direction you are trying to go.
thats the feel im lookin for thanks!

I agree, nice work. If its not suppose to be your traditional beauty ad, you did good.
Like it.
Still wouldn't mind seeing a few product shots of some of their products. Seem kinda empty in that sense and at first glance it has that RAVE invitation look. A few products might lead you more towards the market its aimed for.

I like the poster for the comestic company, but the brochure needs more work. Granted there will be some text somewhere or images of their products, I suppose there is more to come in yet.
I don't like the pink and white circles. They are too overdone. I see circles everywhere (including lots of my own work until I caught myself!). A little bit on the poster is ok, but a whole panel on the brochure is over kill. Front sideo of the brochure - I'm not digging the solid pink. Make it less severe by overlaying that beautiful floral pattern you got going.
I like your ad force stuff. What's the purpose of a spin card? Your logo is very cute - you don't get what the shape is initially, but when you see the planes in the rest of the design it goes *click*. "higher" standard phrase helps your logo. I like the colour, fresh and distinctive. Good stuff.

I don't know, I like the way the circles work in this design.....it gives me a since of balance!

thanks guys, and yes i would have to agree with you 100% budafist, i find myself throwing in circles and shapes subcontiously in my work, its crazy....ill rework the pink as well, i just didnt want to flood the front with too much, but what the hell why not give it a shot.
the spin card will have the white areas die cut out, and there will be another panel with text below, essentialy you will spin the top layer and the cut out will scroll over a question about our company on the right side, while the left white spot die cut will have some text for the answer. since we are a new ad agency we thought it would be a great tool to give to potential clients who are a little hesitant to go with someone new.
so far i got these ideas
brochure is still in rough draft stages
rework circles, use different design, rework pink on cover, include flourish graphics.

also, since im pretty new in the industry, whats wrong with spec work? i mean ive been doing a bit lately, we have a good shot with these clients so my creative director pretty much gives me projects and lets me go to town.
i mean if they dont approve it i can still keep it for my personal portfolio if i liked it. and im getting paid for it regardless.

That many circles may be a bit much, but I kind of got the sense that she was playing in bubbles or in a bubble bath or something like that. I think they're fun.
I gotta admit that I don't care for the fact that this is spec work either. Is it all spec work or just the poster? There are a lot of things wrong about spec work. The first is what it does to the industry as a whole. Plumbers don't come work on your pipes and if you like it you pay for it. It doesn't work like that. We can't tell people on one hand that our time is valuable and that we must charge for it and then on the other hand pass ideas out on a silver platter hoping that someone will eventually nibble. It cuts other designers out of work and when you aren't in the "spec phase" of your career, you aren't going to appreciate it when spec is expected of you. I understand that you're getting paid for it, but still... the underlying principles remain. The other problem with it is that you are trained whether it be by self or formal education to do a task that everybody can't perform. By doing spec work, you are lowering the value of what it is you do. You're cutting off your own foot as you march towards your future. It's gonna hurt when you start limping!

If you are a student building your portfolio, I guess spec work is ok. Just be careful of companies trying to rip you off. Also be careful of people that take your ideas rework them a bit and don't pay you.
You are getting paid for spec work? Well good for you.
The spin card is a cute idea. Will it be expensive to produce though? You'll need a dieform made as well as eyelets and those pin things with 2 legs. Make sure you got some quotes and if it saves money, put these things together yourself.

ok thanks for clearing that up for me Cornfed and budafist.
the only thing that is spec work is the makeup stuff, everything else we are using and putting into production.
Our agency has only been open for a month. so i kinda feel like spec work is a useful tool just to get our name out there, i agree cornfed that doing work that may or may not be accepted by the client is risky. But in order for us to get work i think its part of the process. i think once we goet some credibility built up spec work will go down.
i graduate from college with a degree and we never really taked about spec work in school. i hat the idea of doing work that wont ever be used, but as long as im getting paid for it i guess i donthave a problem with it all the time.
i voluntered for the camellia makeup work just because i thought i had some coll ideas to share.

for the cosmetics flyer, frankly I feel like the designer is trying to please himself instead of doing something for the client
you are burying the model with your graphics, which, should be on the spotlight in my opinion, the art direction is ok, but play it a bit down and let the model (i.e. product) shows a bit more would serve the client better, my 2 cents

Ditto on the amount of graphics on the cosmetics poster, and the many circles on the pink flier. For both, play down the transparency of some of the elements (say, some circles very light and some heavy) and reduce the variation of tones (say, to 2 varieties), and of course the amount of elements.
I now get the concept for the triangular logo, a bomber from front view. Very cool tee and flier - I like the combinatiuon of colour and dating.
