Lovely work! Just curious what the deal is with using the marylin monroe image. Who owns rights on old images like that? How were you able to use it for a publication? I know two thirds of bugger all about third party image rights.

the magazine bought the copyright to use this image on one off basis and it wasn't cheap. Not at all...

Not surprised it was pricey. I think that has to be the most beautiful pin up photo ever taken!

This painting of that photo makes her hair just a little redder than it was in the original photo .... but still a stunning shot of her ;)

That was the main idea behind the Photoshop work on this image. I took the original image and worked to achieve vargauesqe pin up look mixed with the NEW elements. I was aware of the colour changes, especially noticable on the hair, however I was more than happy to stick with it. It works really well with the overall colour scheme...

Geez, I think they heard your cries for tutorial. The editor was in touch today to discuss a AI/PSD tutorial for the next issue. I'm off on holiday which makes me to miss the deadline, so it looks like it will be in the December issue at the moment.
I'll keep you posted!

Nice work. How do you get the gig to do the cover like that? Or, more specifically, if you've never done a cover for a magazine before, how do you get your first gig?
