I need to know what the "rules" are with regards to importing images.
Firstly, when I import an EPS it works as required, but I only have photoshop and not illustrator, so I cannot create proper vector EPS files.
What I would like to do is have a translucent background and import this into Quark - any recommendations?
Also, I have been sent an .ai file and I need to put this into Quark, I am assuming this is not possible as when I print to PDF I have an error log created.

Can you save the Photoshop file as an EPS or TIFF file with a clipping path? Not sure whether or not you need any kind of feathering from the image to the background.
Quark will not import .ai files, at least not 5.0, I'm not sure about 7, but I believe that up to 6.5 you need to save the file as an EPS somehow. At what point are you getting the error log when you print to PDF?
Whoever sent you the .ai file needs to send it to you as an EPS, or needs to make the .ai file PDF compatible, which you could then import into Quark.

It is possible to print straight to PDF with 5.0, I do not need to first save the document as an EPS.
I get the error log when I turn anything with an .ai, but if you cannot incorporate this into a Quark document this makes sense.
What I would really like to know is if there is a file format that I can convert to and change to have a translucent background from photoshop, perhaps eps, psd or pdf.

EPS will give you a hard outlined edge, so you can place your image on top of a background color, but if you have any feathering in your image, a clipping path won't work. Is this what you're trying to do? Can you post a screenshot?
You should be able to print directly to a PDF, provided you have a full version of Acrobat installed. You don't say what operating system you're using. On Mac OS X, you need to just set up Adobe PDF as a printer. Not sure what needs to be done on PC.
