I've been sending pdfs of pages designed in Quark 6 (Mac OSX) to send to a newspaper printer, which are all fine apart from one page where I've used the font Impact as a headline. On the pdf (and hence the final printed copy) it appears slightly smaller and the letters are more spaced out, but all the other fonts are perfect.
Is there anything I'm not doing to ensure this doesn't happen? Does anyone recognise this problem, maybe I should just choose another font?

Are you on a Mac or a PC?
Humm...have you sent your printer all of your fonts so they have them on hand? It could be that they have Impact...but a different version and that could be causing your problem. It could also be in your job settings in Distiller. You may need to check with your printer to make sure you have all the settings they need for you to make your PDFs so they can output them correctly.
I work for 2 papers and last week I had THREE ads (on being a full page) that threw in Helvetica instead of Barmeno but only on 3 ads even tho that font was in quite a bit of ads. I called my printer to talk to them to try and figure out whose end the problem was on bc all of my PDFs appeared fine, and printed fine from my office. She called me yesterday and told me it was a problem with their RIP.
So maybe give them a call. Work with them and they will help you figure out WHY you're having this problem and whose end the problem is on :o)

are the fonts set to embed in distiller? Also is the font resident in the font folders in distiller? I have had problems with Impact in the past. It's not known to be a trust worthy font for some reason.

Did you use the stylize palette in Quark to embolden or otherwise mess with the font? A lot of times unsupported stylizing will not work in a rip.

Ahhh forgot about that PD. I just take it for granted every designer knows not to stylize using the menu options. But I have to stop thinking like that.

Thanks for the help - all of which I will take on board, BUT I think I've now established the cause. I was working on a different machine and just assumed all the fonts on there were Type 1 fonts. Not quite! Impact and Arial were the dreaded Truetype format, and as a result caused the problems at the printers.

Hey thanks for getting back to us.
It's always good to get feedback on the cause of a problem.
Truetype.
