 Can someone, anyone, PLEASE help me?? I'm seriously pulling my hair out because of this. I installed the CS Suite on my MACBOOK pro and all the programs works fine, ALL of them except for Illustrator. It's crashes and shuts down on me as soon as I launch it. I tried looking in other forums and it says to trash the preferences, I did...and it still does it. Right now I'm using Illustrator 10 but it's so old school that a lot of files I need won't even open on it. Please help if you can.....
Thank you so much...
So looking forward to any suggestions...
Gabby :)

I have had the same problem on my MacBook Pro. Illustrator CS2 quits unexpectedly 3-4 times a day, usually while I'm in Photoshop. Would love to know what's causing it and how to resolve the problem.
I too have legit copies of both apps with no pirated software on my Mac.
Ideas anyone?

I am on a PC and it will quit unexpectedly too, but not just quit but turn my screen into a jumbled nonscence and I am forced to reboot.
I think my issue is because we work and use the variable pallettes for alot of our template file and I am pretty sure this is the issue for us.

Have you applied all the latest updates and patches?

I don't know if anything in this link will help you but it's worth a try. It's from the Apple discussion forums:

I'm up to speed with all updates, crashes are still frequent. Thanks for the link -- sounds like there are a lot of us experiencing the same problem. Just hope Apple or Adobe release a fix soon.
Thanks all.

I have the same problem right now for CS on my G4. I have been using it doing freelance work. Then I went to open it and I keep getting that same "Unexpectedly Quit". I'd love to hear the answer to this. I'll keep searching myself. Thanks

My stability problems completely disappeared when I upgraded to CS3. No unexpected quits or performance problems of any kind.

I wish I could upgrade. $ is keeping me down for my personal Mac. I have been using CS for 3 years now and it just started happening. That is why I am confused by this. Although this thread is not mine I appreciate any help since I believe the remedy will fix all of our "Unexpectedly Quit" issues. Thanks

CaseyDesign, was Illy CS working for you before it gave you the Unexpected Quit? (sounds like it was but just asking)
Are you by any chance running Entourage?
Have you loaded anything recently that might be causing a conflict (it could be something as simple as a plug-in)?
Do you have your Ram maxed out?
What version of G4 are you using?
CaseyDesign
08-31-2007, 02:29 AM
Nope. It won't start up at all. I must have downloaded something that is stopping it. I am using a powerbook. I don't have anyother programs open except Safari. I am also running a gig of ram so I doubt that is it. I think it may be a plug-in or something. Any thoughts?

Have you tried repairing permissions and throwing away the Illustrator preferences file?

If you didn't install a new plug-in into Illy then it isn't a plug-in.
Try doing as Urst suggests.
You didn't answer my other questions.
You're on a G-4. If you are running Tiger with Adobe you may not have enough ram at 1gig. Tiger requires quite a bit of ram and Adobe CS, while not quite the pig that CS3 is, can be bogging your system. Another thing to check would be free hard drive space. Illy requires scratch disk space and if you don't have it, it might not start.
So are you saying Illy never worked, or it doesn't work now?
Do all of the other CS apps work? Photoshop in particular?
Did you install or upgrade anything else in the time between working or non-working. ie did you upgrade to Tiger or do an OS upgrade via Software Update?
Can you see if it is crapping out when it says Loading Fonts. Illy CS loads them right at the beginning of the startup string. A corrupt font will put some but not all programs into a tailspin. Do you have a font utility?

Illustrator has definitely worked for about 3 years for me, up until about 2 weeks ago. I haven't thought about opening photoshop. I just tried InDesign and it opened right up. My hard drive is pretty full and I am running 10.3, I forget the name, I think Panther. Definitely not Tiger. I was hoping it was a corrupt font but it goes right through those and shuts off at the plug-in's. It is strange to me.
Thanks for trying for me so far!

Oh, and I have fontbook. Is that what you mean by "font utility" and how do you repair permissions?
Thanks

Fontbook is a font utility that comes with the OS. It's not most people's preferred manager to use, a different utility that I've been using lately to great success and satisfaction is Linotype's Font Explorer X (also free).
To repair permissions, go to the utilities folder in your applications folder, find "Disk Utility". Launch that, and then select your hard driver and choose "Repair Permissions". Don't bother with verifying, just go directly to repair permissions.
To reset your Illustrator preferences, hold down Command-Shift-Option-Control while launching Illustrator.

It happens at the 3D plug-in. I just checked it out.

I fixed it I believe. It seems to have been a plug-in. What I did was watch what the scrolling type was on the opening sequence when it quit. I went to my applicatitons folder and picked the plug-in it stopped with, which happened to be the 3D plug-in. The first one(in the extensions folder). I removed it and Illustrator opened. I didn't have the 3D effect so I changed the name. I chose B3D(random letter to take it from first on the list) and put it back in the folder and it worked. To be honest I don't really know why it worked but it did. I hope this will keep working for me and helps anyone with the similar problem. Thanks for all the effort and I'll let you know if something is not working correctly with this fix. I'll keep checking this to see if anyone has any questions or has any idea as to why this worked.

As an experiment, why not trying renaming the 3d plugin back to its original name and see if it still crashes? It's possible that just dragging it out and then putting it back was the fix, not the rename. Just a thought.

Yup, I named it back and it still worked so you could be right. Last night when I got it working it was really late and I was half asleep. I think I dragged it out and then put it back and it didn't work. I also have a font file there with a composite fonts folder with a temp folder in it. I removed that in the same time frame but that one didn't work for me. It could for someone else. I wish I would have documented it more but I tried so many things that I got tired of keeping track.
The dragging out of the plug-in it was stuck on was definitely the trick. Whether or not renaming it mattered I now doubt. Thanks again for the help!

In response to the original poster:
On Intel Macs (MacBook Pro) Illustrator CS2 crashes when you use the pathfinder functions or compound paths and had the appearance palette showing from the start. (CS3 fixed that)
To avoid the problem in CS2, you have to close the appearance palette and restart Illustrator without it showing. Then you can show it again and illustrator CS2 won't crash anymore with pathfinder.

Sounds like a problem caused by an intel chip running a rosetta program. try to reinstall.
I know if you are using the pathfinder tool in illy and the "appearance" window is open it will crash. Or before reinstalling, open it with everything else closed. I know the CS 1 & 2 have a problem sometimes on an intel if more than one is open.
And of course you can always upgrade to CS3 which is created for the intel infrastructure.
