Hello!

A client is emailing me a high-res PDF document (65 pages) for printing. I have designed the cover in InDesign, but also need to create the contents page and add page numbers/footer to their file.

Is there a simple way to create the page number look and feel in inDesign and somehow add it to their PDF? Or can I easily import/place the entire High Res PDF they provide into an InDesign File, add the page numbers, and then re-create the PDF?

As usual, time is getting away from me and I am just not sure how to approach this job…

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hmm, sounds like the best way to do it would be to import the PDF into InDesign, add the page numbers, etc., and then yes, re-export that as a PDF.

There's an InDesign script in the Extras folder on the install disk that will create an InDesign file from a multi-page PDF. That way you wouldn't have to import and place every page from the PDF manually.

It's purty. :) Let me know if you can't find it, I think it was on the disk, but I might have gotten it off Adobe's website. I have used it, however.

Rick, you beat me to it. I just loaded cs2 on our new station. Saw the extra file disk and thought "don't need it" Now I'm going to check it out. Thanks!

Is there any loss or when placing pdfs and creating a new pdf? We used to have problems ripping things like that.

Would it be "safer" to export the new InD pages as press pdfs and insert the pages into the current pdf? Or is this half a dozen of one, 6 of another?

I've never had a problem placing pdfs in Indy and creating a new pdf. Never lost anything. It could have been your rip giving you problems.

Wouldn't have been the first time. ;) It's been 2 years since I worked at the printer so my prepress knowledge is quickly becoming outdated.

Urstwile, Mate! You've opened up a whole new world... Found the script on the 'Extras' CD as per your advise, and I've also checked out the Script section on the Adobe website where it is also lodged - along with a massive Script Guide and other related goodies!

Love your work and appreciate your direction!

I'm glad it all worked out for you Crooked. There are quite a few very useful scripts out there for InDesign. Another one I'm fond of is one that lets you make a contact sheet in InDesign. Sometimes I prefer that to doing it through Photoshop.

Have fun gettin' scripty! :)
