What are you doing now, and if you don't mind... how much do you make?

If you have been doing some good creative work for 3yrs now you may be able to start looking to move on to something better.

i work at a small 'freelance-type' graphics company with big clients and a pretty heavey work flow... its just me , my boss (we do all the graphics work), and the owners...
i pretty much do all the magazine ads, web sites, posters, catalogs, concept creation and some marketing stratagies... and evey couple months i'll do package designs and identitiy creation. plus any other little client work that comes our way.
i am making $9.50 and hour and i started at $8 right out of high school.

hang in there...I started at $7/hr right outta college as an ad designer...but if you are getting an hourly rate and working over 40 hours then you are entitled to your overtime...I would check into that and be sure that you get that.

about the only job I would do for under $10hr would be sleep study subject! I would say your getting burned expecilly if your working overtime and not getting paid for it. I live in Wisconsin and started out at $29,000yr salary.

Where do you live? you only at $19,000yr

i think your getting burned too man, i started a 8$ at my last job, was up to 11$ within 2yrs, and I worked like a dog for them.....I say if you have been with them for 3yrs and have only had a $1.50 raise...time to start looking, hopefully you have saved your art and have been working on your portfolio....if you go looking for another job and you have a good portfolio, the company isnt even going to ask if you have a degree...so dont worry about that, I have seen alot of good designers that make alot of money and never went to school. I would say you should be making anywhere from $13 - 16 an hour depending on where your located with the experience you have.

OMG! Thanks man so since you know more or less what can I expect because aside from me be a procrastinating person, I'm going to move out there. Trust me either that or my wife will go without me. LOL! So what can I expect to make out there.

Oh and how is Deltona is it country I know it's right outside of Orlando and I seen some really nice homes there?

Deltona is more rural. It's about 45 minutes from me. Between Orlano and Daytona. so you have two markets to tap into if you don't mind driving.

If you were to come down here i would say my best guess is you could make between $28k and $34k starting off. that seems to be the norm. I made $30K when I moved here from Boston 4 years ago asnd now I'm at $41K+ (depsnds of retirement) but that took a bit to break but i have always gone up in Salary. I went up from Boston. NY is different tough... much higher cost of living. Seems to be alot of jobs popping up that you could handle, no problem.

Thanks Defjoe!

Me and the wife where looking at new homes in the area and we seen some really nice ones that are very affordable in Deltona. I don't mind living there as long as I can get to Orlando in like 10-20 minutes. I would be working in Orlando anyhow because I shore as hell won't find a GD job in a farm.

Your in South Orlando by Disney right?

I noticed traveling from coast to coast only takes about 2-2.5 hours so As long as I'm not living in Daytona and working in Tampa I'll be find.

But you said Rural, excacly how rural is Deltona?

I'm used to the suburbs I understand Rural as Pure country with farms.

2-2.5 hours with no Traffic. That is the I-4 corridor with is notoriuos for traffic.

Deltona is more country land from what I understand. I have only driven through there. It will take you longer then 10 minutes to get to Orlando only because of the traffic. Orlando is HUGE so going point to point takes a bit. From the north part of orlando to Disney is like 15 minutes on ther highway.

I live south East by the airport

disney is south west. About 20 minutes from me.

the first thing you have to do is ask yourself, 'self, what's most important to me?' everything else follows after that.

if you love design, if it's what's most important, then set some goals.

in my case, design is an interesting way to make a comfortable living. as problems go, design-problems are nice ones to have. my brother is a cop, and he had REAL problems. if getting rich was a priority, i wouldn't be in design - i'd be in marketing :)

since design isn't the most important thing, i make sure that i set the tone when i start a job. i leave at 5pm every day. if more time is needed on a job, i come back later. but i leave at 5pm to go work out - something that is important to my quality of life. photography, music, writing, exercise, and family are all other very important things to me, and my employers have always known it up front.

that said, i probably don't make as much as someone else in my shoes might, but i'm happy. right out of college, i made $27k/yr in columbus ohio. five years later, i make $38.5k/yr. it's not bad, but it's also not great.

do i have a point to this? yes: set goals, be assertive with the goals, and always value your quality of life above your paycheck.

Dam they just make everything seem so good in the ads.

As long as I don't have aligators in my back yard I guess I can cope.

Thanks for the info Defjoe.
