What social responsiblity does a designer have in the present day??
To rid the world of bad design and designers. To systematically wipe out all, and all known references to PrintShop, Printmaster, Publisher and those little perforated cards you run through your home inkjet. To openly mock any and all employees of Kinkos, Office Depot and Staples. To carry a loupe and whisper secret words like "CMYK" like a masonic signal. To openly flaunt your knowledge of fonts and PMS colours. And the right to revere Adobe corporation with a right-knee genuflection.
have designers got a responsibility to their audience in what they portray to them?
Yes. It should be readable, look good and get whatever point they are making across in under 2.3 seconds. Morals shmorals.
Do they change peoples perceptions on issues.??
Yes. We can make you think we're jerks with mere words - or less. But in tackling bigger issues it takes repeated headbashing, time and money.
I think each designer makes up his/her own agenda. There are some for whom it is just a job and they will never care about anything but the paycheque. For others it is a way to right all the wrongs of the world.

Key, you are too funny.
How many names do you have and how do you pronounce the current one?
LMAO!
The white text on my gray background borders on subliminal.
Again LOL. Might be a new concept in web advertizing.

You still writing that paper?
Do designers have a responsibility to their audience?
Depends on how much their CLIENT is paying them. Especially if the Client is selling a product to the audience...
Then the responsibility to the audience ends wherever the designer's conscience ends.
As for changing perceptions?
Hmmm... I don't get too swayed by marketing, advertising ploys, gimmicks and fads. But many of the huddled masses eat it up. A designer does have a responsibility say, if the thing being designed is a museum exhibit, then a certain amount of unbiased opinion should go into the copy but with advertising... Well, see last sentence in above paragraph.
