Photoshop CS 2 for PC. I have lost the ability to control click a layer to select it instead of having to select it out of the layers palette. Anyone know how to fix this?

I have wierd things go on every now and again ... and a restart usually fixes it ... sometimes I think it just gets over worked ;)
Yeah, CS and CS2 alike. It's usually from low RAM. Functions like this just stop working (also keyboard shortcuts, like the brackets for adjusting brush sizes and hardness). A restart will always fix it. Usually just a restart of Photoshop, occassionally a system restart.

Try to ctrl click the thumbnail icon on the layer ... not the whole layer itself. CS2 is funky sometimes.

I think he's talking about being able to select a layer without having to go to the palette, Kat.
Is it possible that the layer you're trying to select isn't on top? Like maybe sitting under some other layers that are being selected instead? Or is nothing being highlighted when you try to select the layer. Plus, you have to make sure you have the layer move tool selected for this to work.

Oh, carp... I just reread that original post in light of this comment, Urst, and I do believe you're right. I was thinking like Kittie, that he meant to make a selection out of the layer's alpha channel, not to select the layer from the artboard (that would be right-clicking on a multi-button mouse).
Sounds like a matter of too many layers for PS to easily pick from, to me. I would try organizing your layers into layer sets to simplify it.

but doesn't it give you a choice of which layer you want, when multiple layers overlap? It's been a little while since I've played in ps, I've been mostly using illy and design these days.

Not that I've ever seen, unless there's a modifier key for that that I don't know about. I use this a lot (although it's command cuz I'm on a Mac), but it generally selects the layer that's at the top of the stacking order when you click with the move tool selected, depending on whether there are pixels on the layer or not.

See, one of the few benefits of being a middle-aged guy is that you find that you have much more ability to control exactly when you have to click.
Oh, wait a sec. We're talking.... Photoshop here? Oh. Just forget what I said.

I know what I was thinking of... when you right click, it gives you the ability to choose what layer you want...

Yes, and if you don't have a two button mouse, it's command-control click (on a Mac, not sure what it would be on a PC, but that's probably moot because of the right button), and it gives you a choice of layers to choose. Thanks for prodding me to discover that, Carter.
