What is meant by global colours?
Eg Global Green and so on.
Are they any different to process colours?
CMYK?

I am now using Illustrator instead of freehand (migrating)....I think I have a lot to learn. I have bought the Illustrator CS WOW Book. It seems like a great book. But there is a lot to it :/.
So I will have a lot of questions for all you Illustrator Gurus out there in weeks to come!!!

Thanks guys!

The "Help" menu on the far end of the menu bar will give you a wealth of information.

When you check the Global box in your colors, it will, among other things, allow you to assign tints of that color.

As well, it will also allow you to make a change to the color, which will "globally" effect every object on the artboard which uses that color (just edit the color in the swatches).

When you have a global color assigned to an object, go into your color palette, and you will find that you can change the amount (tint) of that specific color applied to the object, rather than changing CMYK values. This is what Rick's talking about...

PS - I use Global Colors with absolutely everything I do in Illy, and highly recommend their use. You can create your design without the perfect color specifications, then easily edit the colors after, or change them to spot colors - whatever your final print needs.

You can also easily make different color versions of your design this way - ie, one light version for dark backgrounds, one dark version for white backgrounds, and one greyscale version for 1-color print.

She's talking about the default colors in the color palette called Global Cyan, Global Squash, Global Puke, etc. that Adobe thinks is a gift to designers by their addition to the swatch palette. My advice? Dump them. Use PMS colors so you know what your prints will look like.

...Global Puke...
That made me smile. Thanks!

Illustrator CS WOW is a great book. I just wish somebody would return my copy...
One thing about the Illy WOW book though - it's more of an example display of what can be done, than actual instruction on how to do it. If you know Illy though, that's really all you need.

Printdriver: Ah yes, now I see the mention of "Global Green" (aka Global Puke) in the original post. :D

Yeah, I back up that statement to dump those colors. The first thing I do with any new document is to "Select All Unused" Color Swatches, Symbols, and Graphic Styles, and trash them.
