I remember seeing a lot of design (and still do) with vertical lines. Especially web design with patters like the one below. the lines move over the screen for navigation, or its on a header or on a business card. Do you guys think this design is "worn out"? unoriginal? cliche'? Just curious if this has been overdone or if Im just crazy..

I just checked the 'best before' date on my vertical stripe collection. Definitely out. Though if you do a lot of UPC work, you're okay.
As for you being crazy, well.... all I can tell you is what I've heard...

As long as you do anything creatively it works. It depends on the piece and what the layout needs.
Go for it and let's see.

Vertical lines are just horizontal lines tipped on their side. It's all good. If the trends move to horizontal liens or vice versa, just rotate your design 90° ... it's all good.
That reminds me of a time at work where we were doing some plain jane directional signage for a conference where we left space on the panels to velcro mount some arrows. And I remember laughing out loud when our client told us we needed "x" number of right arrows and "x" number of left arrows. When she looked at me as if to say, "what's so funny?" I pointed out that it's all just one arrow, they can velcro it on to face either left or right. Yup, she felt pretty stupid.

Is this the design? How are you using them.
BTW they look great on underware.

Jackimyln,
You're looking slim these days. Have you been dieting?
Or..
Hey, is that a vertical line in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

lol you guys....
No, thats not the design, I just wanted to use a few, maybe like 6 bars unevenly spaced on a businedd card... I dont think its going to work though, for other reasons besides vertical lines being soooo last year.

They love horizontal lines and rounded corners where I work but I feel like it's old! I like trends but following to many trends chips away at creativity.
I just did vertical lines for a design, but just a very small amount to tie in the colors I was using. It wasn't like a big huge old background graphic or anything.
I love vertical lines! They are very slimming. I can't say use them in design, but I wear them all the time. I've got vertical pinstripes on right now.

I totally agree, nothing is "out" it just depends on how you use it.

I think rainbow curves are in now or those lines that radiate from one point - like a sun, but get thinner in the centre and wider at the edge of the page. I'm seeing diagonal rainbow stripes a lot now too.
Yes I'm being serious...

No. Vertical lines are out evenly spaced 45degree lines are the staple of now. And it's not just for web 2.0 it's also for print 467.2 !
