here's a little schema of how my computers are hooked up to the net.

My problem here is that computer b has lost network connection, and I can't get it back. Computer A is working fine, and I have tried using Compture A's cable only into Computer B, but still no dice. Is there something that would cause Computer B to stop network connectivity? The firewall is off on both Computers and as far as I know all settings are the same. One last note, Computer A is running XP Home( :( ) and Computer B is running XP PRO SP2

This used to work, so I'm kinda stumped

could be a bad network card. take the network card out of computer a, put it in computer b, and see if that works.

Look in back of the machine. If the normally green lights are orange, then potentially you have a bad network card.... however....

You may just need to reset your network.

Start by turning everything off and unplugging the power to the modem and router - leave it off for 1 minute - this will erase the mac registrations in the machines hardware. Then from the modem first, start powering things up in order and wait a minute or two between machines to make sure that all the mac(machine addresses not apple macs) are registered to the machine you just turned on.

That would be a total network reset with just about any router/modem on the market.

Why does this happen?

Your internet service provides a lease on the IP that it assigns to you. If they change that IP then your equipment will need to change it as well. Normally this goes on with out any problems - however on a network you have the potential of a computer to loose the lease and not renew it.

Following the instructions above will soft reset your network and 99% of the time get you back up and running.

Before you rip your computers apart;

Try a different cable
Try a different port on the switch
Restart router and switch
Restart computers
