If any one could tell me how to do this in Illustrator I would be mega stoked!

The outline around the text?
Convert text to outline the offset your path. You'll have to fiddle with knockouts (compound paths ect.) and combined shapes.

Another easy way is to copy and paste to back adding a thicker stroke.

Not for the outer paler yellow also-stroked shape beyond the black.

So copy paste in back, add stroke, copy paste in back add thicker stroke.
I know the other way works but there is no reason you can't do it this way. We have 9 designers here that will tell you its much faster (use quick keys and it takes like 5 seconds). Also you don't have to outline your text so it remains editable.

But its tomayto to Tomato right>? heh heh haven't we had this debate before?

I agree with DMs method. Just in case you need to make tweaks to the copy. That's the way I'd do it at least, which must make it the right way ...

Wow. I wonder what it feels like to be 'mega-stroked'?

Just wanted to add that for Corel users, a one step exterior contour works very well (given the discussed limitations) as it doesn't require vector path compounding and recognizes knockouts.

Oh! It's 'mega-STOKED'!

Dang! But now I can't stop thinking about being mega-stroked.

lol

Well all I can say is we used this copy paste in back thing everyday for every order we have. We do Team names and numbers in massive quantities and the basic set up the way we do it is much more time efficient (less clicks) and can be put into an automated production line after artwork is approved. So we have to be able to edit numbers and names (but we outline all artwork).

If you're using Illy CS2, you can also use the appearance palette to put multiple strokes on a single object. Not that I ever do it this way, because much like DM I learnt to stroke the text and send it to back years ago, and just keep doing it that way.

Still, that's probably actually a better option if you're going to want to edit the text later.

Yeah we tried the appearance metheod, no good when you want to change 100 stroke colors.
With the copy paste metheod you can find same stroke/color/weight etc. So we stuck to the copy paste in back.

The only times I really hate stroked lines are when they are used in signage and logos.
For print, using a mega-stroke (I just had to say that :p) is fine. For logos you should expand all your options so things go exactly as you intended. And for signage (cut 3D or vinyl) the machines don't read a stroke thickness, only a line. Then I have to do the conversions. Which I do all day. Which is why I protest.
So there.

well I guess alot depends on your output, so yeah one metheod would be good for one and the second for the other.

I agree in all logos should be expanded, as I said we do it the way I stated for our inhouse production reasons and its the best for us, but can totally see how that it would annoy you at your job PD. And expanding it (set as a quick key) is really quite simple. Ctrl E is set on my computer to expand, why oh why Illy didn't make a quick key for that I don't know.

I agree with DMs method ..

((but .. if you have to stroke many objects .. your file will be scary in size ... ))

Ain't nuthin scary about file sizes under a gig. LOL!

Yep, I have an expand hot key and a create outlines hot key. And several other hot keys Adobe thought unecessary... :D

The big problem with "Mega-Strokes" in the Appearance Palette (and I still don't know why they do this), is that you have to create outlines of your text before you can use it. At least in CS or older...

That's still the method I use though - unless, as you say, you have a LOT of stuff to stroke like that.
