Good Morning,

Ok, Here's what I've done, and I'm not sure where I went wrong:

I have a large document in which I've used Pantone 201 (red) for headers and black for text.
I've placed a couple dozen items from Illustrator (.ai files) into the document, and these items contain Pantone 201, black, 10% gray, 25% gray and 75% gray.

Somehow, in my Indesign swatches palette, I have my Pantone 201 C (which properly shows up as red), a 10% gray which is labeled Pantone 201 C 1, and a 25% gray which is labeled Pantone 201 C 2.

The grays, which somehow picked up the 201 C1 and 201 C2 names cannot be deleted.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Thank you,
J

Are they used in placed vector eps files?

No, all the graphics that I placed were .ai.

I was hoping there would be a 'find' action so that I could see all the instances where these mystery mis-labeled grays appeared.

They also come up on the preflight under the 'inks' tab.

Check the actual .ai files for those particular color errors.
InD will list pms colors used in linked files but you can't edit them in InD.

Sometimes people will use the Option-Drag method to replace colors in Illustrator. This does not rename the colors, it only changes the values. Bad bad BAD bug.
I've seen submitted files like you describe. Sometimes the fix time isn't pretty.

I've found the quickest way to find these offending colors is to print them out as separations, either on printer or PDF. See what if anything prints out and then you can see where they are.

Kool's got it. That's a trick I haven't used since my days back at the quick-printer.

Aha! I found the improperly named swatches in one of the early figures I did in illustrator. What a relief... I'll watch out for that next time.

Thanks for your help.

You can also view the separations directly in InDesign with the Separations palette.

Glad you found the culprit.
