Does anyone know how to get a ripped effect for maybe an edge? If anyone knows this via FW please let me know also.

Preheat scanner to 6300 degree Kelvin.
Piece of suitable paper, rough edge, hands.
Pull... and scan.
There are plugins and actions of course-- few come close to the genuine aritcle though.

Google?
Use the lasso tool to create a ragged outside edge (the edge of the rip), erase what's on the other side - keep the selection (or reselect it by CTRL/CMND-clicking on the layer thumbnail), and hold ALT or OPT while drawing a jagged line with the lasso tool to run sort of parallel with the first ragged line, leaving a selection of area along the edge. Add Noise (Filter => Noise => Add Noise) with a gaussian, monocromatic effect, then reduce the the output level in the Levels dialogue box (CTRL/CMND-L) to white out the area (not completely, just until you get the desired effect). Oh yeah, then place a shadow under the ripped object.
That's it.

Emma,
I did a quick example of the ripped effect technique I posted earlier. Just takes a minute to do...

Hey Ned how did you get that effect on my image. That’s how I found out, via the lasso tool, but if there are others ways I am all for it.
I did try Google....I always look on Google that’s how I found out the lasso way. I wanted the effed for maybe a cool edge effect for a website.

He explained it in this post in the same thread, Emma.

That version was done via the lasso tool? Doesn’t look like it. Where you using different layers Ned?
Nope. That was all done on one layer. Best is to zoom in until the area you want "ripped" just fills the screen. Any more, and the lasso becomes difficult to use when you have to scroll the screen, while any less and you don't have the accuracy.
When you do your first (outer edge) rip, it's best to save that as an alpha channel. Gives you a little more freedom, so when you do your second (inner) rip-line, you can easily redo if you don't like the look of it. You need to get fairly close to the first line, but you don't want it perfect!
