I'm making my portfolio site right now (my first website). Anyway, one of the pieces I want to put in there is a class project that I did which is a brochure for an already existing well known company. Since I didn't actually do it for the company, what's the legality of using it in my portfolio?

It's just your portfolio and you're not actually selling it to anyone. So the only people who are going to see it are potential employers. Not to say there might not be a legal problem with doing that, but will anyone really say anything?

Identify it as a class project. No biggy. When I would see portfolios I would see class projects all the time. It is good to have true jobs though, but at least the class project lets us see how you think...that is what counts!

I had that problem a while back with some Golden Paint ads I did in school. I called Golden Paint and asked their permission. They were very nice and said it was fine. I don't know if these steps are necessary, legally, but it may ease your mind just to know it's done and in the clear.

^excellent advice. That way you can be sure you're not stepping on anyone's toes.
