I know the W3Cschools site is a good place to check on these important web design stats, but where do they get their data? Is there a survey of computer users, or is it from on-line scripts that collect data from a lot of users' machines?

It all depends on your audience. If you run an old folks knitting website the users are going to different then if you have a IT blog.

and don't forget that screen resolution stats aren't all that telling - just beacause someone runs 1280x1024 or 1024x768 doesn't mean that they have their browser maximised all the time
