I was considering having music loop on my portfolio (in progress),
http://www.iemediagroup.com/arayu/main.html
to set the mood better.
Is that seen as unprofessional for a web designer's portfolio?

Music on websites is fookin annoying (IMO of course).
If you are going to put music, make sure there is an off switch.

I listen to music when I am on the computer. I don't want to listen to yours.

I agree with both the above. Sometimes the perfect music adds to the site. Offswitch is a must though.

I agree. Music on websites doesn't do it for me. I listen to music while browsing, so mixing sounds isn't all that nice. It actually makes me close that site's window...

I must concur with my esteemed colleague.
As a matter of fact, I usually mute my speakers when I am online, because I hate it when sites hijack my speakers.

I would like to take a stand and post in favour of music on websites... but I can't.
Unless you're a musician, music isn't going to help sell your work.

for the most part I'd agree with all the hooligans above, but if done right ie:
http://2advanced.com/ it can be cool.
I'm assuming your doing this in flash:
mySound.start(0, 99)
//instanceName.start(time to offset, times looped)

I had made a site for class (http://www.angelfire.com/art2/virgo-nightingale/photography.htm) where there was music for the intro animation which faded towards the end, but was silent when you got the main site.
PS: Please excuse my simple non-flashy Flash. I am far from what one might consider a web designer!

If your site plays music, i close the window.

same here. I have my own music playing while working. As much as you might like the tune(s) you chose, I can guarantee I prefer my choices. Sometimes I don't have music playing but my speakers are on. I don't want to have music suddenly blast out when I'm not expecting it
Aside from a musician website I see no reason for having music on a site. Even then, the site should have theoption to listen rather than having it forced upon the user
